Southern states are ranked as heaviest in the nation. Atlanta, named 40th, mirrors the statistic. Poverty plays a major role in the obesity epidemic with fast food restaurants more convenient and cheap. Well, community farmers markets are budding around the Atlanta area, making fresh and affordable produce accessible. There are three popular farmers markets in the area that are making a mark in health, local economic sustainability, and convenience.

The first on the list is Your DeKalb Farmers Market (YDFM). Located on East Ponce de Leon Avenue, opened its doors in the summer of 1977 - weekly hours: 9am -9pm. YDFM offers a hands-on-experience and sales locally grown, as well as, international products. With high food prices being a factor in obesity, YDFM is inexpensive in comparison to national grocers and accepts cash, EBT, debit cards, and checks. The largest and most established of fresh farmers' markets in the area, it also has a - cash only - hot/cold salad bar that, on any given day, serves lasagna, baked vegetables, pizza, samosas, fresh fruit, and a host of other delectable items. Inside are wall-to-wall items from live seafood and freshly baked goods to imported wines and spices. "The essential to budget travel is to prepare in advance. When it occurs to family trips, globetrotting, well-deserved trips and/or going to see new spots we have never been before, the fact of cost and budgeting is often in the back of our thoughts. Arranging and spending our travel budget properly is a priority for most families. Reducing spending and charges, while still experiencing your vacation to its fullest, is the key to certain success and fiscal liability. Your pocketbook and family will thank you! The thought behind saving money while touring is simple: Even if your personal budget is incredibly tight, you can still take a break and enjoy life! Simply put, life is just too short to never step out of the door or departing the homestead! Also keeping in mind that while traveling, whether on a budget or not, even the smallest of things can all add op to a large vacation or travel bill!..". An epicenter of culture and local fresh organic produce, YDFM is the grandfather of community farmers markets. Given its popularity, the best time to avoid the crowd are Thursdays after 2pm when the lunch crowd has been satisfied and workers are preparing for the weekend rush. Also, for a more enjoyable experience, remember to bring a jacket even during the spring and summer months it's chilly inside the warehouse-style facility. And if you're from a foreign country try to locate your country's flag, they all hang from the ceiling.

The East Atlanta Village Farmers Market (EAV) is a weekly Community Farmers Market open on Thursdays from April December, 4pm to 8pm. EAV farmers market sells organic fruits and vegetables, meats, cheeses, honey, dairy, spices, herbs, flowers, soaps and bread, to name a few, while music plays and neighbors socialize in the background. Chef demonstrations and the learning garden are also attractions. By connecting the community through promoting local urban farmers, education, and the communal effects of eating freshly prepared food with family and friends, EAV is part of the movement to make organically grown produce a convenient reality to those who want to feed their families right. EAV is located at 561 Flat Shoals Avenue, Atlanta, GA 30316.

Grant Park Farmers Market (GPFM), also part of the Community Farmers Market initiative, was voted "Best Place to buy Local Produce on Sunday Morning" by Creative Loafing. As the recognition implies, GPFM is open on Sundays starting April - December from 9:30am to 1:30pm. Established in 2011, by a group of urban farmers, commitment to sustainability, community, education, and health is at the heart of what they do. GPFM also accepts cash, debit, and double EBT and SNAP program cards. GPFM is located on the corner of Cherokee Avenue and Milledge Avenue.

Now that warmer weather is upon us, lets get outside and partake of the sunshine, exercise, and visit the East Atlanta area farmers markets.
