Key West, Florida is quite a distance from Shreveport, almost 1300 miles, but when combined with a trip to Daytona Bike Week it is plausible. The top destination for riders is the buoy marking the "Southernmost Point in the United States" located in Key West, Florida at the corner of South and Whitehead Streets. However, the buoy is technically not the southernmost point. Florida's official southernmost point is Ballast Key, a privately owned island south and west of Key West. Signs on that island strictly prohibit unauthorized visitors. The marker is not even the southernmost point of Key West island. The private yard directly to the southeast of the buoy is obviously further south. Land on the Truman annex property just west south-west of the buoy is the true southernmost point on the island, approximately 900 feet further south, but it has no marker since it is U.S. Navy property and can not be entered by civilian tourists. The southernmost point of Key West island accessible to civilians is the beach area of Fort Zachary Taylor Historic State Park. Furthermore the claim on the buoy stating "90 miles to Cuba" is a rounded number, since Cuba at its closest point 94 miles due south. Still, no rider's travel logs would be complete without a trip to the buoy to take the requisite picture. This is definitely one trek you should add to your bucket list.
