US Airways Drops Free Water

In one more cost-cutting move by an airline, US Airways has decided to start charging passengers for water on its flights. The sheer inhumanity of this action astounds me, especially as the security regulations on carrying liquids makes this one very hard to get around without some ingenuity.

If, as a budget traveler, you decide to make your stand against paying on this issue, here are some suggestions.

• Remember, you can bring an empty water bottle with you through security. Only the full ones cause trouble.
• While few true budget travelers will be having a meal at airport prices, if you do order anything, do so once you're beyond your final security checkpoint and ask for non-bottled water. Most fast-food spots will give you a cup, albeit reluctantly.Use this to fill your empty water container.
• Use your budget-traveler guts and ask for that samecup of water even without buying anything.
• Bravely fill your water bottle in the airport bathroom or at one of the increasingly-rare drinking fountains. Yes, this freaks me out too. Comfort yourself with the knowledge that most bottled-water companies undergo less testing than your average U.S. city water supply.
• On US Airways itself, ask for non-bottled water. The airline policy is not clear on this and you may still get your free cup of water... for now.
