Its a promise you have probably made to yourself. Someday Im going to be adventurous and see the world. In three simple steps, you could be on your way.

Step one: Figure out how much it will cost

Remember, this is not set in stone. You wont be able to plan for every little unexpected event but you can set up a system that leaves you prepared.

Youll want travelers insurance, if youre leaving the country. If youre going for a few weeks, you should be able to get travelers insurance, including medical coverage and baggage loss, for $500 or less.

Many of travelers will tell you about traveling sans insurance without incident but heres a little something that might change your mind: An acquaintance recently broke her femur on a trip. She didnt have travelers insurance and the country she was in isnt exactly famous for its health care.

She had to catch an emergency medical flight back to the U.S. It cost a whopping $20,000. Her family members who were with her, had to max out their credit cards to pay for the flight.

Get the travelers insurance. Various packages and quotes are available online, at sites such as Travel Insurance Center. If youre determined to risk your credit history, at least bring a few credit cards.

Step two: Plan your transportation

If youre going to be in a location for more than a few days, you may want to rent a car or purchase a mass-transit pass. If youre headed to Europe, you may want to get a Eurail pass, for example.

The Eurail pass lets you travel via train all over Europe at reduced rates. Sometimes you even get to travel free. Perks with the Eurail include reduced fees on rail lines and ferry lines, and discounts with Hilton International. The price for a pass depends on the amount of time youre traveling and the number of countries you plan to visit.

Step three: Purchase your airfare

Getting good deals on airfare is one of the few perks in this economy. Check online for discounted flights or hire a travel agent to do so for you. Travel agents can also provide advice on travel insurance policies.

You may want to purchase your travelers insurance, transit pass or rental car, and hotel or hostel stays on a credit card with airline miles. This could help you purchase that ticket. Remember to check travel sites for package deals.

Your major steps to your next adventure are complete. Now all you have to do is choose your destination.
