After a long winter and a relatively cooler Spring thus far, Massachusetts is warming up and alive with color as trees, shrubs and flowers burst with a full spectrum of colors. Nature lovers are in for a treat as vegetation and animal life emerge yet again, and the Mass Audubon wildlife sanctuaries throughout Massachusetts offer close encounters with nature and fun activities for all ages.

Start planning your outing by visiting the Mass Audubon website and finding a wildlife sanctuary near you. Many sanctuaries have Nature Centers where you can meet knowledgeable staff and learn about flora and fauna that you may encounter during your visit.

Sanctuary Spotlight - Drumlin Farm in Lincoln, Mass.

  • Drumlin Farm in Lincoln is a very popular working farm and wildlife sanctuary with activities for kids of all ages (arrive early on weekends). Families might start with a visit to the animal barns, where you have encounters with sheep, goats, chickens, pigs and more, and perhaps pick up some tidbits from farmers while they do their chores. Then hop aboard for an old-fashioned hay ride as a tractor pulls your trailer around the farm.
  • After the hay ride, perhaps youll want to visit the Bird Hill and Underground exhibits for a rare chance for a close up viewing of fox, hawks, owls, skunk and other animals. "The essential to budget travel is to prepare ahead. When it happens to family trips, globetrotting, well-deserved trips and/or going to see new spots we have never been before, the truth of cost and budgeting is always in the back of our mind. Planning and consuming our travel budget properly is a consideration for most families. Lowering spending and prices, while still enjoying your vacation to its fullest, is the key to certain achievement and fiscal responsibility. Your pocketbook and family will thank you! The reasoning regarding saving money while travelling is simple: Even if your personal budget is incredibly tight, you can still take a break and enjoy life! Simply put, life is just too short to never step out of the door or leaving the homestead! Also thinking about that while traveling, whether on a finances or not, even the smallest of things can all add op to a big vacation or travel costs!..". All of these animals have been injured or disabled, and could not survive in the wild, and have found a protected home at Drumlin Farm.
  • Drumlin Farm also offers three miles of hiking trails, a learning garden, and Discover Drumlin activities throughout the day led by naturalists. On your way out, visit the farm stand and the Audubon Shop near the admissions area.
