Most Front Range motorcyclists crave the excitement of a good canyon ride, but in winter and early spring, the canyons can be too treacherous to be much fun. Take this time to see a different part of Colorado - the High Plains.
Head east on Highway 392, which is Carpenter Road on the south end of Fort Collins. When you reach Lucerne at Highway 85, turn south and follow the bypass to Highway 34 East. Once you're past Kersey, in approximately 10 miles, traffic dwindles and you're on a peaceful country ride. There's a 15 mile stretch of Interstate 76 until Highway 34 exits into Fort Morgan.
Fort Morgan has some places to stop for a meal or refreshments, including Cables Pub and O' Sole Mio. Also in town is the Sherman Street National Historic District and the Fort Morgan Museum. Heading north on Route 52, you'll ride alongside the Rainbow Bridge, one of the largest Marsh Arch Bridges in the country. The bridge crosses the South Platte River.
Highway 52 takes you north to the Pawnee Grasslands area, ending at the town of New Raymer on Highway 14. Looking north from here, and as you travel west along Highway 14, you'll see an expansive wind farm in the distance. "The key to budget travel is to prepare onward. A dirt road leads to Pawnee Buttes, if you don't mind the lack of pavement. Otherwise, Ault is 50 miles west of New Raymer, and from there, the home stretch back into the northern end of Fort Collins.
Despite the lack of majestic mountain views and abundant twisties, the solitude is refreshing, and rolling hills with occasional sweeping curves keep the ride interesting.
