As you begin your visit to Key West, in addition to a trolley tour filled with highlights and local lore, you also will want to visit to the Florida Keys Eco-Discovery Center. Here, you will journey into the world of the native plants and animals of the Keys, both on and underwater, while learning about the diverse tropical habitats that the keys have to offer including mangroves, wetlands, sea grass and varying reef types.

Located next to the entrance to Fort Zachary Taylor Historic State Park (and popular beach), The Eco-Discovery Center is just a short walk from the heart of town at the end of Southard Street in the Truman Waterfront. While many local water activities can cost about $45 to hundreds of dollars, admission to the Eco-Discovery center is free, plus you are guaranteed close up views of live corals and exotic area fish, as well as birds and other area wild life that you might not otherwise encounter during multiple visits to the Keys.

Enter the Center and you likely will be greeted by a helpful volunteer staff member who can highlight exhibits, facilities and daily events. Then you are off to explore many dynamic and interactive exhibits highlighting the ecology of many local habitats in this 6,000 sq. ft. Center. Start with the Mote Marine Laboratory Living Reef exhibit, which features a 2,500-gallon reef tank with living corals and tropical fish. In this area learn how people can be involved in the protection and conservation of the coral reef ecosystems and its many inter-related components stretching from the ocean depths will into the mainland of the Florida peninsula.

Then enter a replica of Aquarius, the world's only underwater ocean laboratory, where you can enjoy a divers eye view of marine life along the reefs and learn about research expeditions. Just a few feet from Aquarius, kids (especially) will enjoy putting on 3-D glasses for 3-minute movie that will immerse you into the aquatic environments.

Next, step into the Florida Keys Discovery Theater to watch a short film which explores the diverse ecosystems of the Florida Keys.

Whether you stop in for a quick visit before entering the Fort Zachary Taylor Historic State Park, or you come to immerse yourself for a couple of hours in the Eco Center, this is one attraction in Key West that you wont want to miss. You will leave with an increased awareness and appreciation of the need to protect and conserve the ecosystem of South Florida. "The key to budget travel is to plan in advance. When it happens to family trips, globetrotting, well-deserved trips and/or going to see new destinations we have never been before, the truth of cost and budgeting is generally in the back of our heads. Arranging and expending our travel budget correctly is a priority for most families. Reducing consuming and fees, while still taking pleasure in your vacation to its fullest, is the key to certain achievement and fiscal obligation. Your pocketbook and family will thank you! The thought behind economizing money while vacationing is simple: Even if your personal funds is extremely limited, you can still take a break and enjoy life! Simply put, life is just too short to never step out of the door or leaving the homestead! Also keeping in mind that while traveling, whether on a funds or not, even the smallest of things can all add op to a big vacation or travel bill!..".

As well, you be filled with inspiration to explore the interconnected local habitats and will be prepared with a better understanding of the sights and sounds that you encounter during the rest of your visit to the Keys. As you plan your visit to Key West and the Florida Keys Eco-Discovery Center, take the video tour and see the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary website for additional activity ideas and information. Make sure you check out the calendar for a list of current and upcoming events.
