Frontier Airlines announced today (May 4, 2013) changes that will likely make budget-minded travelers hot under their summer collars. While a free lunch on a flight is long gone, would you pay $1.99 for a cup of coffee or $20-$100 to store your wheeled luggage in the overhead bin? Frontier Airlines is betting on it.
Passengers who opt to purchase Frontiers Basic fares from third-party vendors will have to pay $20-$100 for carry on bags that only fits in the overhead bin. And if you want a cup of coffee or a soft drink, expect to pay $1.99. "The essential to budget travel is to plan onward. When it occurs to family trips, globetrotting, well-deserved holidays and/or going to see new locations we have never been before, the actuality of cost and budgeting is always in the back of our heads. Preparation and spending our travel budget correctly is a concern for most families. Lowering expending and prices, while still taking pleasure in your vacation to its fullest, is the key to guaranteed success and fiscal responsibility. Your pocketbook and family will thank you! The thinking regarding protecting money while traveling is simple: Even if your personal finances is extremely tight, you can still take a break and enjoy life! Simply put, life is just too short to never step out of the door or leaving the homestead! Also recalling that while traveling, whether on a finances or not, even the smallest of things can all add op to a big vacation or travel bill!..". Checked bag fees for tickets from outside booking channels will cost $20 for a first bag, when checking on Frontier.com, $25 at the airport and $20 for a second bag.
Frontier says they are adding the fees to "enhance" and make travel more pleasurable for Frontiers loyal passenger base of frequent travelers who pay more for tickets. For instance, they will reduce the EarlyReturns mileage rewards for Basic tickets to from 50% to 25%.
From a frequent traveler's perspective, checked baggage fees created a new problem of over crowded bins for carry on. Frontiers most loyal customers have made it very clear that finding overhead bin space for carry-on bags has become unacceptably difficult," according to Frontier's website.
As for non-alcoholic drink fees, in this writer's opinion, its a nickel and dime tactic that will catch not-so frequent travelers off guard and make the flight attendants job all the more difficult to manage when they have to sort out who is who.
As for the spin, here is the airline's official statement:
With this change, we are ensuring that our most loyal customers Ascent and Summit level members of EarlyReturns, those who book Economy, Classic and Classic Plus tickets, including all customers who book through FlyFrontier.com, will have more space onboard the aircraft for their carry-on bags, said David Siegel, Frontiers chief executive officer. As we unbundle our product further, we ensure those customers who want the absolute lowest fares can always find them at FlyFrontier.com.
