Just because the warm weather has left New Jersey for the season, taking with it beach days and the cast of the Jersey Shore (thankfully), does not mean that there is nothing left to experience along New Jersey's coastline.
In Atlantic City, alone, there are plenty of shows and museums to see and casinos where you can lose your money. The Atlantic City Car Show will be rolling into the convention center in February, bringing with it plethora of classic cars to check out.
The rest of the Jersey Shore is not in total winter hibernation either. Most of the arcades at the Seaside Heights Boardwalk, as well as the arcades and aquarium at Jenkinson's Boardwalk in Point Pleasant, remain open during the winter months, and with the population of faux-tanned Snooki wannabes safely back in North Jersey and New York, it is far more enjoyable and child-friendly.
In addition to these year-round activities, there are many other seasonal events to taking place.
Cape May has been transformed for the holidays into Victorian village reminiscent of a Charles Dickens' novel and abounds with tours of wineries and some of the decorated Victorian houses, several theatrical productions and trolley rides. Ocean Grove will be decorated until January 4 with the winning entries from this year's Gingerbreadhouse Competition. Prospective visitors are asked to eat a hearty meal prior to visiting Ocean Grove in order to quell any desire to eat the winning entries. The rustic, seaside town is delightful to explore in and of itself, with plenty of quaint shops and restaurants while away a day walking about.
If you are a basketball fan, from December 26th through the 31st, the Boardwalk Basketball Classic will be taking place at the Wildwood Convention Center, with high school teams from around the state participating. Instead of bickering on how many millions they will make this year, these kids play to raise money for graduating seniors of two local high schools, Wildwood and Wildwood Catholic. The event is the largest coed basketball tournament in the country and has raised over $275,000 since 1998. Tickets can be purchased at the door.
You could also visit one of the eleven lighthouses located between Cape May and Sandy Hook. Their hours are limited during the winter, but most are at least open every weekend for several hours each day. It is advisable to call before trekking out to one because weather conditions could affect their hours.
If all else fails, there is always the option of relaxing and watching the sun rise over the ocean or set over one of the bays in the peace and quiet of a Jersey Shore without all of the tourists.
