Patty Davis, from Kentucky, grew up in the 1950s in Midwest Indiana, the only daughter of a stay-at-home mom, a father who took Sabbatical from his factory job to become an ordained minister, and three brothers.

While her mother always wanted a little princess to play dress up with, it was her dad who won; he got a little gear head who didn't mind getting her hands dirty poking around in an engine compartment of a car. Instead of dolls purchased for her by her mother, she enjoyed card games and sports. And rather than frilly dresses, her favorite clothes were always jeans and tee shirts. She was the quintessential tomboy from an early age.

As with many young women, some poor choices in her early adulthood resulted in a marriage to someone totally inappropriate. Although the marriage was probably doomed from the beginning, it did produce three children, two girls and a boy.

After that miserable marriage and vowing to never marry again, Patty immediately met David. He also had a broken first marriage and was raising his three daughters on his own.

David had a motorcycle and Patty asked if he would take her for a ride; that simple request may have sealed the deal. They fell in love and decided that perhaps raising six kids together would be easier that each of them raising three separately. For anyone who has ever raised that many kids, easy is not an adjective that best describes that task.

Not long after they were married, David decided to teach Patty to ride a motorcycle. He bought and fixed up a little Harley-Davidson Sprint and even painted it to match his Harley-Davidson Sportster.

At the time, they were living in Illinois, the Prairie State; the prairie as in not many trees. In fact on their two-acre piece of land there was only one tree. So with the kids all watching, David gave some basic operating instructions to Patty and pointed her and the Sprint towards the open field. Seconds later the front tire of the Sprint was trying to climb that lone tree! So he started the bike again and once again pointed the bike towards the field. Once again the bike tried to tree itself.

After several attempts and all with the same result, Patty made the decision to just enjoy riding behind.

Six kids take lots of money and lots of time so motorcycling soon took a back seat to raising children. For several years, David and Patty did not own a bike.

Finally the kids were all grown and on their own. Suddenly with more money in the budget and more free time during the week, a motorcycle was all that seemed to be missing.

They bought a Harley-Davidson and they joined the local HOG chapter. It was during the very first group ride, a Bug Run, that a chapter member, Sandy, found Patty asking the Road Captain all kinds of questions about the route; Patty was a major map fanatic, just like her dad. Sandy, although she didnt ride her own, encouraged Patty to take the MSF course and get her motorcycle endorsement. As Sandy said, With those mapping talents, you are wasting your time riding behind.

Patty didnt hesitate. In early fall of 2004 at the age of 54, she took the first available MSF class. Even before the weekend was over, she was shopping for a bike.

Her first motorcycle was a 1998 Sportster. Today she rides a totally chicked-out 2001 purple Lowrider.

She has been to every one of the 120 counties in Kentucky and over 30 states via motorcycle including some incredible roads like Beartooth Highway, Needles Highway, The Tail of the Dragon, Natchez Trace, Blue Ridge Parkway, and many more great motorcycle roads.

She has also turned that love of motorcycling and for sharing a story into a writing career here at Examiner.com where she shares stories of women who ride their own and articles about motorcycle travel.

Life hasnt always been perfect. David and Patty lost a child, their only son, to a car accident. There are always the health problems that come with aging, such as arthritis. But as long as they have each other and their motorcycles, they feel Life is good.

As the fastest growing segment of the motorcycling public, women are more inclined than ever before to move from the passenger pillion to the front of the seat and to grab those handlebars. In this series of articles called She Rides Her Own we will profile a woman motorcyclist, what makes her unique, and how she got started riding on two wheels. "The essential to budget travel is to plan in front. When it comes to family trips, globetrotting, well-deserved trips and/or going to see new destinations we have never been before, the fact of expense and budgeting is generally in the back of our mind. Arranging and expending our travel budget carefully is a main concern for most families. Minimizing consuming and fees, while still delighting your vacation to its fullest, is the key to assured accomplishment and fiscal obligation. Your pocketbook and family will thank you! The thinking behind economizing money while traveling is simple: Even if your personal budget is really limited, you can still take a break and enjoy life! Simply put, life is just too short to never step out of the door or leaving the homestead! Also recalling that while traveling, regardless of whether on a funds or not, even the smallest of things can all add op to a big vacation or travel charge!..".
