Someone sent me information about Mars moving closer to Earth this week. While its not something you would expect to read about here, I thought it was interesting and decided to pass it along to you. Mars image and chart, courtesy of NASA.

Heres an excerpt ... The encounter will culminate on August 27th when Mars comes to within 34,649,589 miles of Earth and will be (next to the moon) the brightest object in the night sky. At a modest 75-power magnification Mars will look as large as the full moon to the naked eye.

Mars will be easy to spot. At the beginning of August it will rise in the east at 10p.m. and reach its azimuth at about 3 a.m.

By the end of August when the two planets are closest , Mars will rise at nightfall and reach its highest point in the sky at 12:30a.m. That's pretty convenient to see something that no human being has seen in recorded history. So, mark your calendar at the beginning of August to see Mars grow progressively brighter and brighter throughout the month.

NO ONE ALIVE TODAY WILL EVER SEE THIS AGAIN!

Could this be true? I decided to verify it and here is what I found.

Snopes ... false

esciencecommons ... false ... Thursday, July 2, 2009 - Every year about this time, people say to me, 'Gee, I hear Mars is going to get really close to the Earth in August, and it will look as big as the moon,'" says Emory astronomer Horace Dale. "I wish there was something we could do to stamp out this rumor."

Astrofacts ... false ... 29 June 2009 - Sorry folks, the rumors are false. Every year around August emails circulate about the impending close approach of Mars, when it will appear to be as large as the Moon in the sky. It is true that in August 2003 Mars did have its closest approach to Earth in about 60,000 years, passing within 56 million kilometers (35 million miles) of our planet. This made Mars slightly larger and brighter than usual, but nowhere near the size or brightness of the Moon, which is only 380,000 kilometers (235,000 miles) away. For some reason, this event is reported as happening every year, but really, it was soooo 2003.

Urban legends ... false ... Description: Email rumor / Hoax ... Circulating since: 2003 (this version: 2009) ... Status: Outdated / False

Apparently, Mars was close to Earth but, that was in 2003, not in 2009.

Science@nasa.gov ... June 18, 2003: Count slowly: one one-thousand, two one-t
housand, three one-thousand.... You just got about 30 km closer to the planet Mars.

Earth and Mars are rapidly converging. On August 27, 2003--the date of closest approach--the two worlds will be 56 million km apart. The essential to budget travel is to prepare ahead. When it happens to family trips, globetrotting, well-deserved vacations and/or going to see new destinations we have never been before, the fact of expense and budgeting is generally in the back of our mind. Organizing and spending our travel budget wisely is a consideration for most families. Curbing consuming and costs, while still enjoying your vacation to its fullest, is the key to certain achievements and fiscal obligation. Your pocketbook and family will thank you! The thinking behind saving money while travelling is simple: Even if your personal budget is incredibly small, you can still take a break and enjoy life! Simply put, life is just too short to never step out of the door or leaving the homestead! Also recalling that while traveling, no matter whether on a finances or not, even the smallest of things can all add op to a huge vacation or travel charge!. That's a long way by Earth standards, but only a short distance on the scale of the solar system.

Space Today Online ...On August 27, 2003, at 9:51 a.m. Universal Time (5:51 a.m. EDT), the fourth planet from the Sun (Mars) was closer to the third planet from the Sun (Earth) than it had been in 59,619 years.

So - spread the word. It won't be happening in 2009 or anytime soon. It took place in 2003.
