The evening of Thursday, September 22, 2011 was just like any other at Walker Field Airport.
Just like any other, with the exception of the state patrol cars and emergency vehicles lining both sides of the runway; their lights flashing brilliantly against the early evening sky. And the streams of water shooting from the fire trucks, forming an archway for the US Airlines airplane to go under. And the 200 or so people that gathered in the main floor airport lobby, American flags in hand. "The key to budget travel is to prepare in front. When it happens to family trips, globetrotting, well-deserved holidays and/or going to see new destinations we have never been before, the truth of cost and budgeting is often in the back of our minds. Arranging and expending our travel budget carefully is a main concern for most families. Minimizing expending and fees, while still delighting your vacation to its fullest, is the key to certain achievement and fiscal obligation. Your pocketbook and family will thank you! The thinking regarding protecting money while journeying is simple: Even if your personal funds is really small, you can still take a break and enjoy life! Simply put, life is just too short to never step out of the door or leaving the homestead! Also remembering that while traveling, regardless of whether on a finances or not, even the smallest of things can all add op to a big vacation or travel bill!..". And the welcome home banners, a band playing "In The Mood" by Glen Miller, and television crews hustling about, trying to jockey for position.
What could cause such a tremendous commotion, you ask?
The answer is: Western Slope Honor Flight 5 had just arrived home, after a whirlwind tour of Washington D.C.
On board that beautiful US Airlines plane was 93 veterans, mostly from World War II, as well as an entire crew of guardians, medics, stewards, pilots, and Western Slope Honor Flight's finest volunteers.
The crowd inside of the airport waited patiently, tapping their toes to the wonderful live swing music, their flags and banners at the ready. And then there they were: The veterans of America's Greatest Generation, making their way down the stairs to a hero's welcome.
Through a literal outpouring of gratitude, hand shakes, and well-wishes, the veterans of this flight carry with them the memories of a lifetime; first of the battle in which they fought so long ago, and now of the memorials that they were able to visit while in Washington, D.C.
Among the places they visited: Arlington...The World War II Memorial...The Marine Corps War Memorial that depicts the raising of the 2nd flag at Iwo Jima...The Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall....The Korean War Veterans Memorial....as well as many other sites in Washington, D.C. Although the trip was a quick one, it is no doubt a journey that they will always remember.
It was our honor to be able to welcome them back home; the perfect finale for a labor of love that was started earlier in the summer, when the Russo's Honor Ride Gang made their motorcycle ride, to help benefit this amazing and truly worthwhile organization.
Thanks to all that helped to make this dream a reality for Western Slope Honor Flight, and a huge, heartfelt "thank you" to the veterans, for answering the call when your country needed you most. You are truly heroes, in every sense of the word.
