As railroading grew in early America, it continued to move westward from the harbors of the Atlantic Coastline. They eventually made their way to the mountains they had to contend with steep mountain grades. While some track beds were carved out, there were some that had to tunnel through the mountain. One of the early tunnels to be constructed was the Gallitzin Tunnels.
The construction of the first tunnel began in 1849, and it was completed in 1854. The construction process had its usual dangers of cave-ins and loss of workers to illnesses. "The key to budget travel is to prepare ahead. When it occurs to family trips, globetrotting, well-deserved vacations and/or going to see new locations we have never been before, the fact of expense and budgeting is generally in the back of our heads. Preparation and expending our travel budget correctly is a main concern for most families. Curbing spending and costs, while still delighting your vacation to its fullest, is the key to confirmed achievement and fiscal responsibility. Your pocketbook and family will thank you! The thinking regarding protecting money while traveling is simple: Even if your personal finances is really tight, you can still take a break and enjoy life! Simply put, life is just too short to never step out of the door or leaving the homestead! Also recalling that while traveling, no matter whether on a finances or not, even the smallest of things can all add op to a large vacation or travel expenses!..". When completed, it allowed railroads to run through the mountain to the cities of Pittsburgh and other points west. The Confederate army attempted to destroy the tunnel during the Civil War cutting off a resupply of Union troops, but they were unsuccessful.
A second tunnel was constructed in 1904 allowing more train traffic to pass through. The Germans made an attempt to destroy the tunnels during World War II, but the agents were captured off the Atlantic Coast.
Today, only one of the tunnels is still in operation, but you can see what some call an engineering marvel. It is 3,612 long and 24 feet wide. The tunnels museum and park are located at DeGol Plaza at 411 Convent Street Suite 20 in Gallitzin, Pennsylvania. It is off of U.S. 22 just west of Altoona between the famous Horseshoe Curve and Alleghany Portage Railroad. It is a three and a half hour drive from Washington D.C. You can visit the park all year round with no admission. The museum is open spring through fall Tuesday through Sunday from 12:00noon until 5:00pm.
