If you happen to find yourself in South Texas on US Highway 281 and find yourself looking for a bite to eat, there exists a sleepy non-descript restaurant just 20 miles south of Falfurrias that goes by the name of El Luzero Restaurant. Technically, it's in Encino, TX (according to Google Maps). If your heading south it's on the left and sits alone and is is absent any real signage or other eye catching items. Odds are you will pass it before realizing what it is. The side of the building simply says Restaurant as the El Luzero has nearly faded away... and that is only viewable if you are heading north. Don't worry there is a place to turn around in either direction when you miss the entrance.
Returning from a trip to McAllen I spotted this place and decided to give it a go. Once inside it's modestly decorated with wood paneling and a few pictures. Again, nothing super noteworthy which really caught my attention. Decor of this type will usually indicate one of two things to me. The food is either subpar and reflective of the apparent lack of effort in the rest of the place or, it tells me they focus on the important stuff... the food. It is afterall why you stopped in right? Right.
Pretty standard looking menu offerings as far as Mexican restaurants go but my eye caught the word "medium" when looking at taco options. I've heard of soft tacos, crunchy tacos and in Texas even "puff" tacos but never a medium taco. Well, that sealed the deal for me, I simply had to find out what this medium taco was all about.
The waitress took my order for a beef taco plate and an iced tea. A very short wait later I was presented with a large plate of 3 tacos, rice and beans. It appears that medium means a hybrid of the crunchy and puff taco styles and after the first bite I knew I would be back and that medium was something I would be searching for at every Mexican restaurant I go to in the future. These were great! Fresh lettuce and tomatoes in a uniquely seasoned ground beef filling and cheese. The beans were pretty standard and the rice was exactly what you come to think of when you think of spanish rice. It took no time to put these away and contemplate another plate but the sure to follow food coma would not be a great thing to fight while riding another 4 hours afterwards.
Since that initial visit, I have returned to feed my medium taco habit three additional times. This is not insignificant because this means a 4 hour and 45 minute ride for me. I find them that good. The staff is very friendly and best of all, the price was very reasonable at about $8.00 for the plate of food and a giant iced tea.
