In Mitchell, South Dakota, home of Klock Werks Kustom Cycles, a residential facility for abused girls, Abbott House, has gotten a boost of horsepower. Klock Werks launched a program this year called Helping with Horsepower.
This unique, one-of-a-kind program not only raises money for Abbott House but gives residents of Abbott House an opportunity to help re-build a damaged motorcycle and at the same time provide inspiration and a chance to re-build their own self-esteem. Laura Klock, vice president of Klock Werks, says This project gave Abbott House girls the opportunity to learn powerful life lessons while transforming a damaged motorcycle into a beautiful machine, just like they will transform themselves into amazing young women.
The program started in early spring of 2011 with Laura Klock working with the girls of Abbott House to repair, re-build, customize, and finish a damaged motorcycle. After months of work, the 2002 Harley-Davidson Softail Heritage Classic was transformed into Salt, a beautiful work of art. Along the way the girls learned that just like a motorcycle, you can repair and rebuild anything in your life with the right tools and inspiration. In addition, the girls learned some practical skills, received hands-on experience, and became empowered through the education and encouragement this program provided.
So why the name Salt for this motorcycle? Salt was the inspired name suggested by one of the residents of Abbott House. Helping with Horsepower is changing and preserving the lives of South Dakota girls just as salt is used as a preservative in daily lives.
The Salt motorcycle was helped toward her final glory by some of the giants in the custom motorcycle world. Klock Werks not only donated time and education to the girls for the project but also donated some of their custom accessories including Perfecta handlebars, Tire Hugger front fender, Benchmark rear fender with plate pocket, lighted license plate frame, points cover, custom tail light, marker lights on saddlebags, horn cover, and Billboard FLARE windshield. Lindby Custom, Inc. donated the highway bar; Vance & Hines and the Vance Family Foundation furnished the duals with fishtail tips and the intake kit; Mustang Motorcycle Seats contributed the touring seat with passenger seat including backrests for both passenger and rider; and the custom paint was done by Carl Brouhard Designs. Other donations were made by Gear Wrench (a complete set of tools), Paul Holdsworth of IronWorks Magazine, Saggy Bags, and Wizards. "The important to budget travel is to approach in front. The girls restored the 1950s-style leather saddlebags with quick detach buckles. Other specs include 1450cc Twin Cam 88B engine, a 25.4 inch seat height, and Metzeler wide whitewalls on the front and rear.
Now for the really fun part this bike can be yours! Raffle tickets can be purchased through Abbott Houses website or by calling (605) 996-2486. The tickets are $20.00 each or six for $100.00; the drawing will be held on December 1, 2011 during the Festival of Lights Celebration.
About Abbott House in Mitchell, South Dakota:
Founded in 1939, Abbott House is a private charity that provides residential treatment services to girls between the age of seven and seventeen. With a current capacity for 40 girls at any one time, it is the only all-girl facility in South Dakota that focuses on abuse and neglect issues. Girls that come to Abbott House have often had little or no family support; endured extreme trauma; experienced sexual, physical, emotional, and/or mental abuse; been diagnosed with depression, anxiety, and/or ADHD; and/or had suicidal thoughts. Among the services offered at Abbott House are individual and group therapy, sexual abuse therapy, anger and mood management, psychiatric treatment, drug and alcohol treatment, medical services, and schooling. Community involvement by the girls is encouraged with programs such as Meals on Wheels, Salvation Army, Cancer Walk, nursing homes, and in cleaning parks.
