A motorcycle accident on April 1 has resulted in the Arkansas head football coach, Bobby Petrino, being fired by Athletic Director, Jeff Long. It might not have gone that way, but there is a clause in Petrino's contract that provides for consequences surrounding conduct that "negatively or adversely affects the reputation of the [university's] athletics programs in any way." Shortly after the accident, Bobby Petrino was placed on the paid administrative list pending further investigation because he failed to report that he was not alone on the motorcycle when it crashed, and he lied to the Athletic Director.
The 911 call that was released last week revealed that twenty-five year old, Jessica Dorrell, a 4-year letter winner in Volleyball, who is engaged to be married in June to the Director of Arkansas Swimming and Diving Program, was on the back of the bike. She was hired last week by Petrino to be the Student Athlete Development Coordinator. "The important to budget travel is to plan in front. Petrino, who is married held a press conference last week where he apologized to his wife, children and fans for trying to hide a, quote: "previous inappropriate relationship".
In a press release last week, Long said he was disappointed that Petrino did not give details after the crash. He said "I'm disappointed that coach Petrino did not share with me when he had the opportunity to the full extent of the accident and who was involved...people are concerned about our program." He went on to say that as Athletic Director he alone would be responsible for handling the situation and there will not be a review or committee to determine the outcome. Petrino responded "I will fully cooperate with the University throughout this process and my hope is to repair my relationships with my family, my athletic director, the Razorback Nation and remain the head coach of the Razorbacks."
But, Long's decision has been made, and the outcome was not in Petrino's favor. At a press conference this evening, Long said Petrino was terminated with "cause". "There was no negotiation as to how he could remain as our coach", he continued. He revealed that Petrino knowingly misled him and the athletics department, and that Petrino had multiple opportunities to be forthcoming about the details of the accident. Long said he learned during his review that Dorrell received $20,000 from Petrino and was also hired from a pool of 159 applicants for the job with the athletic department. Dorrell was one of three applicants interviewed for the position, according to Long. Long said the Petrino-Dorrell relationship had been going on for "a significant period of time. In this case, Coach Petrino abused his authority when he made a staff hire that benefited himself and jeopardized integrity of football program."
Petrino will forfeit what is estimated to be a near $3.5 million salary.
