Air New Zealand is advertising a new class of economy seating called Economy Skycouch, comprised of three economy seats with armrests that fold back and a footrest under each seat that pull ups with the touch of a button. With the footrests extended and the help of some pillows, the seats become something like a couch, allowing two people to cuddle up and sleep more comfortably. The average adult won't be able to lie fully flat since the width of Air New Zealand's seats are about 18 inches, so the airline is promoting the seats as a great option for cuddly couples or a parent with a child.
The Economy Skycouch will be available on Air New Zealand's flights from and to London via Los Angeles beginning April 2011. Fitted on their new 777-300 aircraft, there will be twenty sets of the Economy Skycouch seats, positioned in the ten outer rows of Economy class.
According to reports, the Economy Skycouch seats will cost the price of two economy seats plus half price for the third seat. This pricing model will definitely appeal to the budget traveler for whom business class is out of question but who still yearns for a more comfortable flight experience. I tested the offer and found that for a booking from London to Auckland via Los Angeles departing April 15 and returning back to London from Auckland via Los Angeles April 27, 2011, the cost of the Skycouch seats for two persons totaled $4,850.75. In comparison, the cost of a regular economy seat on the same flight is $1651.37 per person, for a total of $3,302.74 for two persons. So in reality, the Skycouch seats came out to cost more than simply two and a half economy seats but it's still significantly less than two Business Premier seats, which cost almost $11,000.
Other airlines are sure to follow in Air New Zealand's footsteps if this new seating configuration proves to be a success. With the SkyRider being contemplated for short haul flights and now the Skycouch in existence, albeit a very limited one, travelers will possibly be presented with more options that meet their budgets. Hopefully, an airline that services San Francisco will also offer this seating option for long haul flights.
