If you are passionate about travel and/or wanting more information on the "where to go, how to get there, what to do there", then head to the Los Angeles Times Travel and Adventure Show! Tomorrow, Sunday, March 20, is the last day of the show. It runs from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. "The important to budget travel is to prepare ahead. When it comes to family trips, globetrotting, well-deserved holidays and/or going to see new places we have never been before, the reality of cost and budgeting is generally in the back of our thoughts. Preparation and expending our travel budget properly is a consideration for most families. Curbing expending and charges, while still delighting your vacation to its fullest, is the key to assured success and fiscal obligation. Your pocketbook and family will thank you! The thinking regarding protecting money while travelling is simple: Even if your personal funds is extremely tight, you can still take a break and enjoy life! Simply put, life is just too short to never step out of the door or leaving the homestead! Also remembering that while traveling, whether on a funds or not, even the smallest of things can all add op to a huge vacation or travel expenses!..". After spending a wonderfully long time at the show today, here are a few tips this LA Budget Travel Examiner learned:
1. Buy your tickets online before you get there.
Buying tickets online will save you $3 on the $12 entrance fee (although note, there is a $0.75 online booking fee per ticket). If you have kids, they get in for free! If you do buy online, be sure to stop at the "Advanced Registration" booth. The booth is at the top of the stairs of the LA Convention Center on the left hand side as you walk in. You need to stop at this booth to turn in your printed ticket for a wristband before you can enter the show. To purchase tickets online, visit LAtimes.com.
2. Get there early.
If you're looking to get some of the free goodies that exhibitors are giving away, you need to get there early. By about 12:30 p.m. today, a lot of exhibitors were out or running out of many of their giveaways. Also, getting there early will give you ample time to see all of the 500-plus exhibitors.
3. Bring a suitcase.
This might seem a bit extreme, but after just visiting five booths, this Examiner began to truly envy those who brought a little roll-along suitcase. There are so many brochures, travel guides, pamphlets, goodies, etc. to collect and it becomes very heavy, very quickly. (Just in case you don't want to bring a suitcase, several of the booths are giving away cool tote bags, but again, get there early if you want the bags.)
4. Attend the Los Angeles Times Presents: Cents and Sensibility -- Practical Tips to Save Money with Online Travel forum in the Travel and Adventure Theater.
This presentation was awesome! Today the featured speakers were Mary Forgione of the LA Times; George Hobica, founder of Airfarewatchdog.com; Johnny Jet of Johnnyjet.com; and Kelly Merritt, author of "The Everything Family Guide to Budget Travel". The presentation answered questions and offered tips on topics such as finding the best online deals on airfare, hotels, vacation packages, and so much more. You could send the speakers tweets on Twitter during the presentation to ask questions, which they answered at the end. For those not tweeting, a microphone was passed around for people to ask questions at the end of the presentation. Bottom line, if you want to find out tricks of the trade and great ways to land amazing deals, attend this forum! (Note: The speaker line-up changes on Sunday. 5. Bring a sweater for outside, and be prepared to take it off inside.
One of the first things this Examiner noticed when she entered the building was how warm it was. There are so many people at this event, all hustling and bustling, and it gets pretty warm fairly quickly. While it may be cool outside, plan on probably shedding a layer or two once you're inside.
6. Have fun!
There are hundreds of exhibitors to visit and it can begin to feel overwhelming. But take your time, see a few booths and then take a quick break in one of the seating areas sporadically located around the building. Strike up a conversation with exhibitors for the best deals, tips, and information. They can tell you so much more than just what's on the brochures and pamphlets. And be sure to enter the numerous giveaways at several of the booths. They are offering great prizes, like trips to Hawaii and African safaris! Most of all, enjoy your time taking in the "sites" of the world!
