As San Francisco gets ready to shoot off fireworks and people all over the Bay Area break out their barbecue grills and coolers in honor of Independence Day, you may be wondering how other countries celebrate their successes in overthrowing oppressive foreign rule. Here are some of the ways that Independence Day is enjoyed throughout the world:

Belize

People in Belize celebrate their independence from the British on September 21. The Central American country really knows how to party; their Independence Day is near the end of three weeks of festivities. For the entire month of September, Belizeans participate in festivals and marches, listen to special songs on the radio and watch live performances that celebrate their culture and history against the backdrop of buildings decorated with red, white and blue streamers (the colors of the Belizean flag) and the smell of delicious food wafting in the air. The September Celebrations start at the beginning of September, culminates with Battle of St. George's Caye Day (September 10th) and winds down after Independence Day.

Greece

Let's hope that by their next Independence Day, Greece will have dug themselves (at least a bit) out of the social turmoil currently engulfing them due to the unpopular austerity measures. Every March 25, Greeks mark the occasion when they freed themselves of the Ottoman Empire with parades and festivals across the country. It's an especially festive time as March 25 is also the Feast of Annunciation, which celebrates the angel Gabriel's appearance to the Virgin Mary to tell her that she was going to bear the son of God. "The essential to budget travel is to plan in front. When it comes to family trips, globetrotting, well-deserved holidays and/or going to see new destinations we have never been before, the reality of cost and budgeting is always in the back of our mind. Preparation and expending our travel budget correctly is a consideration for most families. Lowering consuming and charges, while still experiencing your vacation to its fullest, is the key to confirmed success and fiscal responsibility. Your pocketbook and family will thank you! The thought regarding saving money while traveling is simple: Even if your personal funds is extremely small, you can still take a break and enjoy life! Simply put, life is just too short to never step out of the door or leaving the homestead! Also keeping in mind that while traveling, no matter whether on a finances or not, even the smallest of things can all add op to a huge vacation or travel charge!..". Both secular and religious festivities vie for space on Athens' clogged streets.

Ghana

Ghana independence from British rule was proclaimed on March 6, 1957. Every March 6, Ghanians gather in the streets of Accra to wrap themselves in or wave their national flag (red, yellow and green stripes with a black star), sing their national anthem "God Bless Our Homeland Ghana" and watch a giant parade filled with military demonstrations and speeches by the country's rulers.

Indonesia

Toward their Independence Day, which takes place August 17, Indonesians drape their buildings in red and white (the flag's colors), shop Independence Day sales, clean and beautify their neighborhoods and watch TV shows commemorating their struggle of independence from The Netherlands. The President and Vice President lead a flag hoisting ceremony at the National Palace while kids play games and people indulge in their favorite street foods.
