Staycation: Boulder Jewish Festival

Kugels and knish will be on the menu at the 16th annual Boulder Jewish Festival on Sunday, June 6, 2010. The festivities will take place on the Boulder County Courthouse lawn and Pearl Street Mall. This is a free event.

The celebration includes continuous main stage entertainment featuring musical acts such as Dan Nichols and Eighteen, and Or Zimrah, the band of Congregation Har HaShem. Other food booths will include Falafel King and Jimmy & Drew's 28th Street Deli, which was named one of Esquire Magazines best sandwiches in America.

The festival will also feature a fine art and Judaica show where you can browse booths showcasing jewelry, wearable art, and handicrafts.

Along with all the fun, 40 non-profit organizations will be present at the festival. You can visit their booths and find out how to get involved in the community.

Like any ethnic festival, this is a chance for some people to learn about another culture while others enjoy the opportunity to get back in touch with their roots. For example, if you have a mezuzah scroll and are wondering if its kosher, you can bring it to the festival to find out. A sofer, a Torah scribe, will be on hand at the Lubavitch of Boulder County booth and will examine your mezuzah free of charge.

If you plan to ride your bike to the festival, you dont have to go it alone. A Bike to the Festival rally will gather at Congregation Bonai Shalom and are planning to leave by 10:15 a.m. You can leave your car in the parking lot. The synagogue is located at 1527 Cherryvale Road, Boulder. The key to budget travel is to plan onward.
