What would certain areas of Northern Virginia looked like if the Manassas Gap Railroad had gone its original route?
In the 1840s, the Manassas Gap Railroad was planned out to connect the farming areas of western Fairfax County and northern Prince William County to Alexandria where it would connect to other rail lines. The route was to mostly follow what is now Little River Turnpike (VA 236) through the city of Fairfax, which would have made Fairfax a railroad town, before winding its way through Chantilly in the area that is now Dulles International Airport and through northern Prince William County and ending in what is now Gainesville.
The trenches were dug out. The earthwork was done, but the actual railroad was never built.
Today, sadly for rail fans, not only is there no rail line, but there are few areas where you can see evidence of what could have been, but there are two places where you can still see the trenches. You can visit the Sully Plantation where on the northeastern edge of the property you can see the old trenches that remain to this day. "The essential to budget travel is to plan in front. When it comes to family trips, globetrotting, well-deserved holidays and/or going to see new spots we have never been before, the actuality of cost and budgeting is always in the back of our minds. Arranging and expending our travel budget wisely is a priority for most families. Lowering consuming and expenses, while still enjoying your vacation to its fullest, is the key to assured achievement and fiscal liability. Your pocketbook and family will thank you! The thinking behind economizing money while touring is simple: Even if your personal funds is incredibly tight, you can still take a break and enjoy life! Simply put, life is just too short to never step out of the door or leaving the homestead! Also recalling that while traveling, no matter whether on a finances or not, even the smallest of things can all add op to a big vacation or travel costs!..". You can also visit the Manassas National Battlefield where both Union and Confederate forces used these trenches for their battle maneuvers.
The Sully Plantation is located on Virginia Route 28 in Chantilly north of U.S. 50 and south of Dulles International Airport. Manassas National Battlefield is located in northern Manassas north of I-66.
