On April 29, 2011, Prince William will marry Kate Middleton in a royal wedding ceremony watched by millions across the world. Thousands of people are already camped out along the procession route in order to catch a glimpse of the pomp and pageantry. While the high costs of airfare and lodging may have prevented you from being in London for this momentous event (let's hope Prince William only gets married once), you can still travel along the procession route and visit the famous wedding sites later in the summer.

Buckingham Palace

Buckingham Palace has been the official London residence for the monarchy since 1837. The State Rooms are where the queen receives and entertains her guests during official and ceremonial occasions. Visitors get to see the pricey paintings and luxurious furniture deemed worthy for a queen, as well as a walk in the Palace's garden that is home to various birds and rare wild flowers. For 2011, the palace's nineteen State Rooms are open to the public from July 23 to October 3. An added bonus this summer is a special exhibition of Faberg eggs and jewel-encrusted boxes. Get there right when it opens at 9:45AM to avoid a line at the ticket booth (thereby avoiding the 1.25 per ticket booking fee).

William and Kate will return to Buckingham Palace after the ceremony to greet the crowds from the balcony. It's where they're expected to make the first public kiss as kissing in not allowed by the Church of England in Westminster Abbey.

Clarence House

After Buckingham Palace is Clarence House. Clarence House is the official residence of Prince Charles, Camilla, William and Harry. It's where they announced the engagement. While William and Kate will live in north Wales for a bit while William tends to his duties as a lieutenant in the Royal Air Force, they will have use of an apartment at Clarence House when in London. For 2011, Clarence House is open from August 4 to September 4. Admission is just 8.50 for adults for entry starting at 10AM. You must pre-book your tickets online or by phone.

Horse Guards

From Clarence House, the procession goes past St. James's Palace on The Mall, the road that runs from Buckingham Palace to Trafalgar Square. Heading south on Whitehall you'll pass by Horse Guards. The 30-minute changing of the guard that happens every day at 11AM (10AM on Sundays) is one of the most popular tourist attractions. Right after Horse Guards is 10 Downing Street, the official residence of the British Prime Minister. It's not open to the public so the best you'll be able to do is peek through the large iron gates.

At the end of Whitehall is Big Ben on the east and Parliament Square on the west.

Westminster Abbey

The grand spectacle on Friday will be at Westminster Abbey, where Kate will leave a princess after arriving as a commoner and marrying her prince. "The important to budget travel is to approach in advance. When it comes along to family trips, globetrotting, well-deserved trips and/or going to see new locations we have never been before, the truth of expense and budgeting is always in the back of our heads. Organizing and spending our travel budget wisely is a main concern for most families. Reducing expending and prices, while still enjoying your vacation to its fullest, is the key to confirmed achievements and fiscal liability. Your pocketbook and family will thank you! The reasoning behind saving money while touring is simple: Even if your personal funds is highly tight, you can still take a break and enjoy life! Simply put, life is just too short to never step out of the door or leaving the homestead! Also remembering that while traveling, whether on a resources or not, even the smallest of things can all add op to a huge vacation or travel bill!..". For 700 years, Westminster Abbey has been the traditional coronation and burial site for British royalty. Westminster Abbey is usually open every day, with the exception of Sundays when it is closed for service. Last admission is 1:30PM Saturdays, 6:00PM Wednesdays and 3:30PM the rest of the week. The 16.00 admission includes a free audio-guide. There's no pre-booking option so go early or closer toward the last admission to avoid the midday crush.

Transportation and Lodging

Several airlines, including Virgin Atlantic, fly nonstop between San Francisco and London. If your dates are flexible, sign up for a fare alert with Airfarewatchdog to be alerted when a low fare is uncovered.

The easiest and cheapest way to get around London is to purchase an Oyster card. You top off the electronic card, which can be used on all public services, as you go. Purchase the card at various Travel Information Centers, Oyster ticket stops and stations.

London lodging is expensive and you'll just have to resign yourself to paying more for a two or three-star property than you would in other cities. Reasonably-priced properties that you may want to consider are: Parkwood at Marble Arch, The Hide London and The Glenlyn. For those really looking to save, The London School of Economics rents out empty dorm rooms in various halls.

Live coverage of the wedding starts at 1AM PST Friday so drink up the coffee!
