Albany, NY's 65th Tulip Fest is May 11& 12--and it's FREE

Spring in Albany, New York, means Tulip Fest. This event that includes the crowning of the Tulip Queen and the naming of the Mother of the Year is in its 65th year.

In 1948 Mayor of Albany Erastus Corning II declared the tulip the official flower of Albany. He asked Queen Wilhelmina of the Netherlands to name a tulip to represent Albany, and she chose the Orange Wonder variety. Tulip Fest was underway.

The weekend includes entertainment, food, and activities. The event is free and many of the traditions have been celebrated for half a century.

The festival begins Friday, May 10 with the scrubbing of State Street, a tradition dating to the Old Dutch tradition of scrubbing the street for festivals and celebrations. The past years Tulip Queen and her court are bid farewell at the Tulip Festival Luncheon.

Washington Park's weekend festivities begin on Saturday, May 11 with music on two stages.

At noon on Mother's Day, Sunday, May 11, the Capital Regions most exceptional moms will be honored by Mayor Jennings and Joe Condon of B-95.5 and the 15th Annual Mother of the Year Award will be given. 2:15 p.m., the Dylan Perrillo Orchestra at 3:30, and East Bound Jesus at 4:45 p.m.

Sundays Main Stage line up features unique events beginning with Zumba for all who wish to participate.There will be more music, a national crafts sale, and a wide array of food.

Fun events in the kidzone include the Radio Disney Road Show, Melvin the Magnificent, and Fairborn Jugglers. Other activities include face painting, pony rides, arts and crafts, and rock climbing walls.

The tulips and the tulip court, five outstanding young women who help the Mayors literacy outreach program, are the highlight of the weekend. Albany Tulip Fest was named a Top Ten Event by the American Bus Association.
