If you've fashioned a trip to darkest Africa for big game hunting, but it wasn't in the budget, we have the next best thing.
The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission will hold the 2013 Python Challenge beginning the weekend of January 12th, with two goals: 1) educating the public about Burmese pythons and how this invasive species is a threat to the Everglades ecosystem, including native wildlife; and 2) allowing hunters to remove as many of these giant snakes as possible from Florida public lands.
Registration can be completed online for the 'General Competition', and will be open through the last day of the competition, Sunday, February 10, 2013. Registration for the 'Python Permit Holder' competition ended in December. Registration for the competition is just $25.
In both divisions a fifteen hundred dollar prize will be offered for the most Burmese pythons captured, and a thousand dollar prize for the longest Burmese python captured.
The kickoff of the event will be Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the University of Florida's Fort Lauderdale Research & Education Center, which will hold an invasive species open house that day.
These giant snakes have become an ecological nightmare for the sunshine state. "The essential to budget travel is to plan ahead. They are not indigenous to the area, and were originally introduced by former pet owners who found them too large to keep and dumped them in the swampy lands they now flourish in. Florida law prohibits possession or sale of Burmese pythons for use as pets, and federal law bans the importation and interstate sale of this species.
As of this writing, over 400 people from 17 states have signed up for hunting. Participants do not need hunting licenses unless they're under 18 and all required training can be done online.
The challenge will conclude with a free Awareness and Awards Event on February 16 at Zoo Miami. On that day, winners of the General Competition and Python Permit Holders Competition will be presented with their awards.
