As the last ice age receded and glaciers were on the move, an incredible landscape was created. The Finger Lakes were all born this way, as well as a hidden treasure known today as Watkins Glen State Park.
A mill once operated in The Glen and was previously owned by Dr. Samuel Watkins before the state park was created at the turn of the 20thcentury. Old trails used by Native Americans to navigate through the gorge were transformed into stone paths and stairs. These same pathways are still used by visitors today and offer some of the most breath taking views. The gorge is about two miles long and drops 400 feet along the way.
The park has 305 campsites, a gift shop, restrooms, showers, hiking and swimming in the Olympic size pool. Nineteen different waterfalls can be found in the gorge so be sure to bring your camera.
Watkins Glen International Raceway is nearby, as well as a long list of wineries that line beautiful Seneca Lake. Shops and restaurants sit shoulder to shoulder along the main street at the base of the park. And if you would like to visit the park but prefer less rustic surroundings several hotels and bed and breakfasts can be found in the area.
