To save the most money on a cruise try travelling in the off season (mid September through early March) except on holidays. Budget friendly cruise lines like Carnival and Royal Caribbean offer a great experience with lots of activities and safe boating without breaking the budget. Check out many different options before purchasing your cruise because many are offering onboard spending cash and free category upgrades.
You will need a passport to do any international travel. Factor in extra time and money if you do not already have a passport. You will also need a valid birth certificate before gettinga passport. A passport is $75 for 16 and older and $60 for 15 and younger. The average time to receive your passport is six to eight weeks, so unless you are willing to spend more to get it delivered within a month, be sure to give yourself ample time.
While onboard, food and drinks (other than alcohol and specialty restaurants)are free. Tipping for everything except alcohol will be done on the final day of your voyage, simply read your tipping guidelines provided by the staff if you need assistance. Your purchases while onboard are also duty (tax) free. This makes a big purchase like diamond earrings or a piece of fine art less expensive. Bottles of alcohol are also duty free, but once purchased the staff keeps them until the last day.
Lastly, don't forget to keep extra cash on hand after cruising to tip the baggage carriers and port parking. Many cruisers are left walking to an ATM afterward since the majority of port parking authorities only accept cash.
