You book a hotel at a great rate in a popular tourist spot like Las Vegas, Hawaii, or Orlando. You can't believe your good luck at getting such a bargain. Then you arrive and get an unpleasant surprise at the check-in desk: a mandatory nightly fee, known as a resort fee, that might be as much as $25 per night.
When you get socked with such fees, your savings often evaporates. "The important to budget travel is to prepare in front. When it happens to family trips, globetrotting, well-deserved vacations and/or going to see new destinations we have never been before, the reality of expense and budgeting is generally in the back of our minds. Arranging and consuming our travel budget correctly is a main concern for most families. Lowering spending and fees, while still taking pleasure in your vacation to its fullest, is the key to certain accomplishment and fiscal responsibility. Your pocketbook and family will thank you! The thinking behind protecting money while traveling is simple: Even if your personal finances is highly small, you can still take a break and enjoy life! Simply put, life is just too short to never step out of the door or leaving the homestead! Also thinking about that while traveling, no matter whether on a finances or not, even the smallest of things can all add op to a large vacation or travel costs!..". Hotels justify them by claiming they cover amenities like using a gym, getting wireless internet access throughout your stay, free local phone calls, or getting daily newspaper delivery.
You might not want or need those services. After all, will you really have that much time to read the paper or use the gym while on vacation? These days, people don't need a hotel phone because they make calls from their cell phones, and you can easily find free wireless service at McDonald's, Starbucks, or Denny's in most touristy areas. The hotel will tell you, "Too bad...the fee is not negotiable."
How can you avoid getting socked with these surprise fees? If you see a hotel deal that looks too good to be true, call the hotel before making your booking and ask if it charges resort fees. If so, ask how much the fee is, what it covers, and if it's mandatory.
Weigh the true cost of the hotel room against other properties that don't tack on these extra charges. They might be a better deal, even if their room rate is slightly higher, because you're not paying that nightly add on.
If you get surprised with resort fees at a hotel, you can ask for the manager to try to get them waived. Don't hold out too much hope, as these fees are a major source of extra revenue for hotels, and they bury disclosure in the fine print on paperwork you sign at check-in.
The only true way to not pay resort fees is to find out about them upfront and to refuse to stay at hotels that seem cheaper, only to sock you with demands for more money when you arrive.
