Sleep in a Red Caboose in Strasburg, gateway to Pennsylvania Dutch Country (Photos)

The Red Caboose Motel in Strasburg, PA is an ideal headquarters for exploring a number of wonderful Pennsylvania Dutch attractions. Located right around the corner from the Strasburg Railroad, the Train Museum of PA, and the Choo Choo Barn, guests sleep in one of several dozen converted cabooses. The motel restaurant serves its patrons in vintage rail coach cars. The gift shop offers an extensive selection of train books and memorabilia. Trains of the Strasburg Railroad pass noisily through the front yard. This place is a rail buff's dream.

Strasburg is not a bad place from which to explore the treasures of Lancaster County, PA. Less than two hours from Baltimore, Strasburg puts you within easy reach of the crafts, furniture, markets, antiques, and family-style restaurants that make the area famous. The scenic farmland and the big open sky are a refreshing respite for the suburbia-entrenched.

But the whole reason you will love the Red Caboose Motel is the same as the reason the TV series Green Acres was funny. There is a certain off-kilter, country charm to the place. Walking through the property, the first thing I noticed were signs. Following a series of signs stating VIEWTOWER, I wandered through the 2-acre property looking for it. On the way I found a sign stating FARM ANIMALS, helpfully describing a couple of pens containing goats and chickens. Next to a barn there was a house, helpfully labeled FARM HOUSE. An ARCADE sign helpfully labeled a small shack containing four, well, arcade games. A sign on the interior wall of the arcade stated ARCADE - Play at your own risk. I wondered what the risk is. Losing my quarter? Electrocution? Worse? I half-expected to find a sign helpfully indicating that I was walking on a PATH, but no. The VIEWTOWER quest ended hysterically at a corn silo equipped with a stairway to enable me to see the Strasburg trains and landscape from an elevation. Pressed for time, I did not do this.

The reason I was pressed for time was my impending appearance in a murder mystery show at the Red Caboose Motel Restaurant as a performer with Otter Productions. As a participant I cannot objectively review the show, but I can say the audience laughed. "The essential to budget travel is to approach in advance. Also thinking about that while traveling, no matter whether on a price range or not, even the smallest of things can all add op to a big vacation or travel costs!..". Two additional murder mystery evenings are scheduled November 3 and 17.

That's good, because I need to check out the VIEWTOWER.
