They don't call it "The Rocket City" for nothing. Located in the northeast corner of Alabama, Huntsville is where you'll find the U.S. Space & Rocket Center, which includes Redstone Arsenal, an active Army facility.
The Center lays rightful claim to one of the finest collections of rockets and space memorabilia in the world. A stroll through the Center's museum takes visitors along a timeline beginning with the earliest rocketry endeavors and continuing to the most recent programs. Among their collection are the original Mercury and Gemini capsule trainers; the Apollo 16 capsule; and the German V-2 rocket. And there's plenty of hands-on exhibits guaranteeing fun for kids of all ages. Museum tours are at your leisure.
Bus tours of Marshall Space Flight Center last about 75 minutes and include two stops: (1) the historic Redstone Test Stand where the Redstone rocket that launched the first American astronaut, Alan Shepherd, into space was tested; and (2) the Payload Operations and Integration Center, which coordinates all the scientific experiments on the International Space Station (ISS).
Admission to the museum is $20 for ages 13 up and $15 for ages 6-12. Add $5 to each ticket price for a combo package that includes admission to one IMAX movie and the museum. The Village transports visitors to 1819. There the delegates of the constitutional convention used a cabinet shop as a meeting place as they laid the groundwork for making Alabama the 22nd state. The Depot is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and features Andy, the robotic ticket agent, telling Alabama's railway history; you'll also see actual Civil War graffiti! The History Museum draws kids into 1800s with way-cool hands-on areas where they can try on period clothing; trade goods at the General Store; and meander around a 46-foot keelboat. Admission to the entire complex: $25, adults; $20, senior adults and students; $5 toddlers. Discounts available for groups of 15 or more.
Take in a baseball game with the Huntsville Stars (a AA-class affiliate of the Milwaukee Brewers). Bridge Street Town Centre offers a charming setting and an impressive selection of both dining and shopping options, as well as Monaco Pictures, a most impressive cinema featuring reserved seating and stylish dining, and very posh Westin Hotel. Shops include Chico's, White House/Black Market, J. Crew, Mountain High Outfitters and dozens more.
Madison Square Mall is anchored by Dillard's, Sears, Belk, J. C. Penney and H. H. Gregg, which are scattered amid a host of other venues such as Foot Locker, American Eagle, Justice and Yankee Candle. Packard's Antiques on Memorial Parkway is only one of many antique shops around the area.
DINING
If you've never experienced Another Broken Egg, this place is a must while you're visiting Huntsville. Serving breakfast, brunch and lunch, their menu could make the finickiest eater weep with joy. Specialties include the Lobster et Fromge omelet with cream and brie cheese, garlic sauted Maine lobster meat and diced tomatoes in a creamy Champagne sauce; and the Big Rooster, a grilled chicken breast topped with Swiss cheese, bacon, lettuce and tomato and served on a Kaiser bun.
A Huntsville resident would spend years trying out the gamut of local eateries which include fast food, barbecue, Southern home cooking, and ethnic foods galore.

Places to stay range from campgrounds to a wide selection of familiar hotel chains from budget-minded to pricey. Just to name a few: Microtel, Marriott, Doubletree, Four Points by Sheraton, Candlewood Suites and Embassy Suites.
Monte Sano State Park offers a gorgeous woodland setting with your choice of campground sites or well-equipped cabins only minutes from downtown. Cabins go for $87 a night weekdays and $102 on weekends. Primitive campsites are $13 to $16 per night, depending on season; improved sites are $22-$28. A 15 percent discount is given to guests age 62 up, 100 percent disabled persons and military/government personnel.
