The local news this week contained a story about a gentleman from Priest River who died after hitting a deer while riding his motorcycle. Unfortunately, such stories are not infrequent in the Pacific Northwest. We have a lot of deer, and collisions occur fairly often. The question is what steps we as motorcycle riders can take to protect ourselves.

Awareness - Always scan the road, and sides of the road in front of you. "The important to budget travel is to approach in advance. When it comes along to family trips, globetrotting, well-deserved vacations and/or going to see new spots we have never been before, the reality of expense and budgeting is generally in the back of our heads. Preparation and consuming our travel budget wisely is a main concern for most families. Lowering consuming and costs, while still taking pleasure in your vacation to its fullest, is the key to assured success and fiscal obligation. Your pocketbook and family will thank you! The thinking regarding economizing money while traveling is simple: Even if your personal funds is highly small, you can still take a break and enjoy life! Simply put, life is just too short to never step out of the door or departing the homestead! Also remembering that while traveling, whether on a funds or not, even the smallest of things can all add op to a huge vacation or travel bill!..". It sounds obvious, but it is easy to relax and get complacent about constantly scanning our surroundings when we are enjoying the ride. Deer are more active at dawn and at dusk when they are harder to see, than they are during the middle of the day. Pay a little more attention during those times, especially if you are riding on rural roads with underbrush that comes close to the side of the road. At night, watch for the reflection of your headlights in a deer's eyes. Also remember that deer usually move together, so if you see one deer, there are probably more near by.

Slow Down - During times when deer are active and in areas where deer frequently cross the road, reduce speed so if you have to make an emergency stop you can do so without losing control. At night, don't over ride your headlight.

Emergency Stop - If a deer does jump in front of you, scrub speed as fast as you can while maintaining control of the bike. Swerving into traffic, or running into a ditch will probably cause as much or more damage as hitting the deer. Deer can change course rapidly, so maintaining a straight line gives you more control and allows the deer the best chance to avoid you.

Finally, deer whistles sometimes advertised on the Internet do not have scientific testing showing that they work. According to the Virginia Department of Fish and Game, no research or data has been collected indicating the effectiveness of these products. Additionally, the University of Nebraska published an article indicating that in many cases the sound produced by whistles and ultrasonic devices falls outside a deer's normal range of hearing, and in any case would be drowned out by road noise. Anecdotal evidence runs the gamut from claiming the products work perfectly, to claims that deer are actually attracted to the sound. Scientifically speaking, deer whistles are probably in the same category as Gremlin Bells. If they make you feel good, there isn't any harm in using them.

Despite all the best efforts you make, you may at some time find yourself in a collision with wildlife. While there may be nothing you can do to prevent such an accident, you can minimize the damage you suffer as a result. Always ride ATGATT, all the gear, all the time. If you won't do it for yourself, do it for those who love you.

Ride Safe and Have Fun!
