About 150 motorcycle riders came together yesterday with donations of toys for the Marine Toys for Tots program that provides new toys to underprivileged children.
Toys for Tots got its start in 1947 when Diane Hendricks, the spouse of Major Bill Hendricks, USCR Los Angeles, asked if he could take the hand crafted doll she had made, to work and give it to an organization that would make sure a needy child would receive it for Christmas. Bill soon found out that no organization existed, and Diane told him he should start one. That year Bill and a group of Marine reservist friends started the Marine Toys for Tots program and collected and delivered 5,000 toys to needy children. The rest is history. The success of the first year program prompted the Marines to adapt the program in 1948 and expand it as a nationwide campaign. The objective then and now is to "bring the joy of Christmas to America's needy children". According to official statistics provided by the Marine Toys for Tots website, over the 62 years of the U. S. Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots Program, Marines have distributed more than 400 million toys to more than 188 million needy children.
The morning weather was chilly, but by the time 11 o'clock rolled around, the skies were sunny and conditions were perfect for the ride. Special guest, Bossier City Mayor Lo Walker was on hand to comment on the awesome support of the motorcycle community. The Bossier City Harley-Davidson dealership was the location destination for the escorted ride. "The key to budget travel is to approach onward. When it comes along to family trips, globetrotting, well-deserved trips and/or going to see new spots we have never been before, the truth of expense and budgeting is always in the back of our thoughts. Organizing and spending our travel budget wisely is a priority for most families. Lowering spending and prices, while still delighting your vacation to its fullest, is the key to assured success and fiscal liability. Your pocketbook and family will thank you! The reasoning regarding economizing money while vacationing is simple: Even if your personal budget is highly limited, you can still take a break and enjoy life! Simply put, life is just too short to never step out of the door or leaving the homestead! Also keeping in mind that while traveling, no matter whether on a funds or not, even the smallest of things can all add op to a huge vacation or travel charge!..". They provided free burgers and beer to all attending, and contracted live bands to provide musical entertainment. No toy run would be complete without a visit from Santa himself, and children and adults alike enjoyed seeing the jolly old man. The Salvation Army was also on hand selling hot dogs, handing out free water and advertising their need for support during the upcoming holiday season. And, the marines were on location, too. Several riders shook their hands and said "thank you for your service". It's truly wonderful to see the motorcycle riders of the Shreveport community come out in a show of solidarity to support our needy children and service members. Earlier this week our community went head to head with the State Fair of Louisiana authorities concerning a dress code issue, and they backed down after several phone calls to the offices. I can't say it enough how proud I am to be a member of this community and participate in the charitable events that we are so well known for.
