Bob Diener, former founder of Hotels.com and current owner of GetARoom.com, has been conducting interviews with CNBC, Fox News and MSNBC offering insider information on traveling this season. Some quick tips from Bob:
"You're nuts to pay full price for anything when you travel"
People are starting to book holiday travel and they're getting sticker shock--prices are up over last year. Bob wants to blow the lid off the travel industry and share secrets that the hotels, airlines and rental car agencies don't want you to know.
- It's often cheaper to buy two one-way tickets on different airlines these days than it is to buy round-trip on one
- Travel on Thanksgiving Day or Christmas Day. They're slow and you'll save a bundle. Seats are about 30% cheaper
- When your flight gets canceled and you're at the airport, never, ever stand in those airport lines. Take out your cellphone and call the airline. They're all using the same computer system. You'll get the last seat on another flight (instead of missing out because you're standing in line)
- When renting a car, always ask for the cheapest car. The rental agencies only have a few of those and they sell out. You'll get upgraded to a better car for the same price
- When flying, travel during non-busy days. In Vegas weekdays are slow and travel is inexpensive...weekends are pricey. In other words, travel a day or two earlier or later and you'll save a ton
- When checking into a hotel always ask if they will give you a free upgrade to a better room. An unused room is an unused room. It costs the hotel the same. If they think you'll be a good return customer, many clerks have the power to upgrade you to a suite without even asking a manager.
- Look online for the best price hotel, but always call and ask for the "unpublished rate." Hotels have rooms much cheaper than they advertise online, often 25% cheaper
