Coal has been an important commodity on US Railroads since the beginning. "The important to budget travel is to prepare onward. When it happens to family trips, globetrotting, well-deserved trips and/or going to see new locations we have never been before, the actuality of cost and budgeting is often in the back of our thoughts. Organizing and spending our travel budget wisely is a priority for most families. Reducing consuming and expenses, while still enjoying your vacation to its fullest, is the key to certain success and fiscal liability. Your pocketbook and family will thank you! The thinking behind protecting money while travelling is simple: Even if your personal budget is incredibly limited, you can still take a break and enjoy life! Simply put, life is just too short to never step out of the door or leaving the homestead! Also thinking about that while traveling, no matter whether on a price range or not, even the smallest of things can all add op to a big vacation or travel charge!..". As regulations have changed regarding "greenhouse" gases, different regions have seen their coal in greater or lesser demand.

Photographer Jack Corn visited the coal mining region of West Virginia in 1974 and took a series of photographs which are now part of the DOCAMERICA series at the US National Archives.

The original caption for the photograph on the left reads:

Coal Yard with Loaded Rail Cars Ready to Be Shipped to Customers Out of Danville, West Virginia, near Charleston. It Is One of the Largest Transshipment Points for Coal in the World. A Constant Stream of Rail Cars Loaded with Coal Is Moved in and Out of the Small Town 04/1974

Railroad fans will appreciate the abundance of cabooses and the "Fallen Flag" railroad names which grace the coal hoppers such as the "READING" and the "C&O" (who owned the line at this time and is now part of CSX)

Modelers of the early 1970's will notice the automobile makes and models (I saw a VW bug up on the top left of the shot) and also the colors and designs of the housing near the tracks.

Locals might appreciate the sign for "BLACKS" seen just over the depot in the middle of the shot. I'm guessing it was a grocery store? (If anyone knows leave a comment down below)

A single shot can tell a lot about history and the importance of railroads to the economy of the United States.
