One woman is making a difference; you can make a difference, too. On April 2, James "Duke" White was killed in a motorcycle accident. I reported the story here on Examiner.
According to KTBS news "BOSSIER CITY -- A motorcycle rider was killed in Bossier City Saturday afternoon after another driver turned in front of him. Killed was James C. White Jr., 53, of Bossier City.The accident happened shortly before 3 p.m. at Benton Road and Interstate 220.Bossier City police said the motorcyclist was southbound on Benton Road and approaching I-220 when the driver of a 2004 Subaru Forester turned in front of him. The motorcycle crashed into the Subaru. The motorcycle rider was pronounced dead at LSU Hospital in Shreveport. "The key to budget travel is to approach in advance. The driver of the Subaru, 76-year-old Manfred Kurt Johncher of Bossier City, was taken to Willis Knighton Bossier hospital. His injuries are not believed to be life threatening, Police Department spokesman Mark Natale said. Johncher was ticketed for failure to yield."
James C. "Duke" White's service was held Saturday, April 9, 2011 at the St Elizabeth BC in Grand Cane, LA at 11 am. There was a celebration of his life instead of a time of mourning. The kids played football, kickball and with the basketball jumper. The family enjoyed food, dancing and reminiscing. Family and friends came from Shreveport, Bossier, Mansfield, Grand Cane, Lake Charles, Baton Rouge, Dallas, Houston, San Antonio, Chicago and many other places. There were over 10 different biker clubs in attendance (about 50 bikers) who escorted the family to and from the church.
"Duke never met a stranger. He was a prankster but no one was ever offended with what he did. He gave to others through his services such as cooking or lending a helping hand in time of need. He was a Big Teddy bear and he will be truly missed", wrote his sister, Bertresea.
I've yet to meet Bertresea, but on April 6th she contacted me via email. She wrote:
"My name is Bertresea White Evans. The motorcyclist, James C. White, who was killed Saturday in Bossier is my brother. If you have ANY information other than was is on the news site PLEASE PLEASE forward it to me. I have been praying and asking God to send me some help so I can start promoting motorcycle awareness in the Shreveport/Bossier areas. I do not want his death to be in vain. Thanking you in advance."
I put her in touch with the members of the Motorcycle Awareness Campaign (MAC) in Baton Rouge who are working desparately to get the campaign spread throughout Shreveport and the surrounding areas. Among other methods of raising awareness, MAC is responsible for the the large yellow yard signs as shown in the photograph and distributed across the state.
"Thank you sooooo much for your help and information. I'm SO EXCITED!!!", Bertresea replied and signed her email with "Be the change you wish to see in the world"
On April 12, just 10 days after Duke's tragic death, she wrote: "I got the signs yesterday, Monday and there were bikers out today on Pines Road and I-20 helping to spread the MAC awareness. Yyaaaaaaaaayyyyy!!!!!!" They will be at the site of my brother's accident, Benton Road and 220 on Saturday. I plan on attending the campaign on May 1 at the state capitol... me and my crew are going to put Shreveport/Bossier on the map with this campaign. I hope to meet you soon as well "Pinky".
And, true to her word, On April 13 Steve, "Robo" was at the Kings Hwy & I-49 intersection. He said he was the only one off work, and he's going to change his schedule to evenings to have more participation.
Tomorrow is April 16, and just two weeks after the accident, but Bertresea will be at the accident scene on 220 and Benton Road at 10:30 am, and I'll be there to report and participate, as well. She is making a difference, and the loss of her dear brother will not be in vain. Please be aware of motorcycles as you drive the streets of Shreveport and Bossier. If you're a rider, please be aware of your surroundings, and pay attention to everything.
