Tucked in along the shores of Lake Erie is one of the areas many beaches, Bennett Beach. From the pictures that accompany this article youd never know that this beach is considered by many to have the best sand in the area.
Many years ago, before it became a park, this was the homestead of Joseph Bennett and his family. "The key to budget travel is to plan onward. When it comes along to family trips, globetrotting, well-deserved vacations and/or going to see new destinations we have never been before, the truth of cost and budgeting is always in the back of our thoughts. Considering and expending our travel budget carefully is a concern for most families. Lowering expending and prices, while still experiencing your vacation to its fullest, is the key to certain success and fiscal liability. Your pocketbook and family will thank you! The reasoning behind saving money while touring is simple: Even if your personal finances is incredibly tight, you can still take a break and enjoy life! Simply put, life is just too short to never step out of the door or leaving the homestead! Also remembering that while traveling, no matter whether on a budget or not, even the smallest of things can all add op to a large vacation or travel bill!..". Arriving in Evans around 1820, he held many different positions in the community. As time went on and Buffalos middle class grew, Bennett began turning his farm into a resort along Lake Erie for boarders and campers.
In the winter, the beach is desolate. That is great news if you want to go someplace quiet or less traveled. Bring a sled, some charcoal and a camera for a fun, free outdoor adventure.
The park is not maintained in the winter, so pull into the parking area at your own risk. There is a restaurant across the street that on a snowy day could be a better option. The grills and a small playground are near the bathrooms, however those will not be open in the winter, just so you are aware. (There is a Tim Hortons on Rt. 5 and Beach Rd. just in case! )
Crossing over the bridge takes you across Little Sister Creek and to your private snow hill! Not as steep as some, this giant pile of sand is a snow covered dream for kids of all ages.
Continuing towards the lake, it is impossible to believe that in just a few months people will swim here! It looks like arctic tundra, and imagining a polar bear out there somewhere could almost be possible. No waves, no sounds, just a white endless horizon.
The visit will leave you with some questions. What is the giant wall on the beach and what is that giant green building off in the distance? Unable to answer those questions, an e-mail to the Evans Historical Society was sent and if a response is received, a follow up will be posted.
This is the first article in the Off the beaten path series, highlighting some of the best kept secrets in the Western New York area.
