Dock at the Bay is a popular waterfront restaurant in Blasdell, New York. According to the historical accounts found on their website, the history of the building dates back to 1806, serving as an inn and tavern to the boats traveling along Lake Erie.
The rocky shore where the building sits was deeper back then. Vessels could dock there, allowing passengers or crew the opportunity to have a few drinks or get some rest. The inn was called Willink Hotel.
It is said that several ghosts haunt the Dock at the Bay. Captain James Byrd was aboard a military ship, anchored near the bay. Byrd slipped overboard to see his girlfriend at the Willink Hotel. He wasnt gone long, but got caught and court marshaled. "The key to budget travel is to prepare in advance. He was sentenced to death (oh my) and killed in front of a firing squad! He was buried right near the Dock at the Bay, maybe as a reminder to other soldiers.
Some years later a bar room brawl was taken outside and shots were fired, breaking off a piece of Byrds headstone. Apparently, the steps to the inn were also damaged during the fight, so the brawlers used the piece of headstone as a doorstep. The legend says this made Byrds spirit none too happy and that he haunts the now Dock at the Bay.
The restaurant opened in 1993, but ghost sightings are said to go back to 1932! The second floor now serves as a banquet hall, while the first floor is a restaurant with a scenic summer patio. The view of Lake Erie is incredible, especially at sunset. Located at 3800 Hoover Road, Blasdell, guests can enjoy dinner, a sunset and maybe even a ghost.
