This Monday, April 22, is Earth Day. It's a good reminder to shop consciously, reduce household waste and energy consumption, and make eco-friendly lifestyle changes. While being a traveler and caring about the earth is inherently a bit contradictory, the tourism industry places huge stresses on the environment after all, you can help reduce the damage by supporting eco and sustainable tourism.
Here are some things to do this Earth Day:

Book a room at an eco-friendly hotel for your next vacation. At the top are hotels that are LEED-certified by the U.S. Green Building Council, which mean that it has earned a minimum number of points on seven environmental categories: Sustainable Sites, Water Efficiency, Energy & Atmosphere, Materials & Resources, Indoor Environmental Quality, Innovation in Design, and Regional Priority. For international travel, you can also search for eco-friendly travel providers, including lodging and tour operators, using The International Ecotourism Societys member search tool.
Many airlines are also doing what they can to reduce their carbon footprint, lessen the amount of natural resources that they use, and in general support the green movement.
