When you think of Sylacauga, what do you think of? Fans of Mayberry's Gomer Pyle - who ended up with his own show, Gomer Pyle USMC - may think of Jim Nabors, since Sylacauga is the home town of the talented actor and singer who portrayed the lovable bumbling Gomer.
Sylacauga was also home to the holder of a Guinness Book of World Records title, Ann Hodges. On November 30, 1954 Mrs. "The important to budget travel is to plan onward. Hodges was napping peacefully on her sofa when a meteorite slammed through the ceiling of her rented home, smacked into a floor-standing radio, then took a bounce into Mrs. Hodges hip. Hodges was napping on her living-room couch at mid-day when the meteorite came through the ceiling, hit a console radio, and smashed into her hip. The terrified woman awoke in pain to see a hole ripped clean through from roof to ceiling and an eight and a half pound rock resting beside the sofa.
Mrs. Hodges became an instant if unwilling celebrity, appearing on the cover of Life Magazine and even flying to New York for an appearance on the popular TV quiz show "I've Got a Secret." Today, since no one else has experienced the same misfortune, she continues to hold title in the Guinness Book of World Records as the only person to be struck by a meteorite.

What can you see around Sylacauga today?North Broadway is where you'll find the Isabel Anderson Comer Museum & Art Center, offering free admission and housing a replica of the Hodges meteor (the original having been donated by Mrs. Hodges to the Alabama Museum of Natural History on the campus of the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa), along with countless local artifacts and memorabilia. Several Sylacauga marble sculptures by famed artisan Guiseppi Moretti are also on display.
The Sylacauga area produces the world's purest whitest marble which has been used in many famous structures, such as the Lincoln Memorial. The annual Marble Festival will be held this April 6-16.
On North Norton Avenue, luscious Blue Bell ice cream is manufactured in a plant in Sylacauga. Visitors can visit the on-site Country Store and Ice Cream Parlor and receive a free, fun, and educational half-hour tour through the manufacturing process.
