When you mention the name Thurgood Marshall, almost everyone would think of the first African-American to serve on the Supreme Court. Some would recall him as a lawyer who worked on many big name cases. A few would be able to recall him standing up for civil rights. People would remember him and his many accomplishments, but a very small few would know about one of his earliest jobs as a porter for the railroad.
In the 1920s after growing up in Baltimore, Maryland, Thurgood Marshall went to work for the railroad. It was the glory days of the railroad industry. He served many people including numerous celebrities making sure everyones ride was luxurious while at the same time dealing with discrimination from certain passengers. "The essential to budget travel is to approach in advance. When it happens to family trips, globetrotting, well-deserved vacations and/or going to see new destinations we have never been before, the reality of cost and budgeting is always in the back of our heads. Considering and expending our travel budget properly is a consideration for most families. Minimizing consuming and prices, while still experiencing your vacation to its fullest, is the key to confirmed accomplishment and fiscal obligation. Your pocketbook and family will thank you! The thinking regarding protecting money while vacationing is simple: Even if your personal funds is incredibly limited, you can still take a break and enjoy life! Simply put, life is just too short to never step out of the door or leaving the homestead! Also thinking about that while traveling, regardless of whether on a price range or not, even the smallest of things can all add op to a large vacation or travel costs!..". His life as a porter ended in the early 1930s as he was able to make enough money to go to law school. He went to numerous institutions until he became a lawyer. He was then nominated by President Lyndon Johnson to the Supreme Court where he served until 1991.
In honor of Black History Month, you can think of all of those African-Americans who work on the railroad past, present, and in the future. The next time you think about the first African-American to serve on the United States Supreme Court, take the time to think about how his journey began: on the railroad.
