During my sophomore year of college, my friends and I decided we would study in Florence, Italy during the fall semester of our junior year. When it comes to my abroad experience, I find it hard to put into words because they don't do it justice. I believe that if you have the opportunity to study abroad, you should. What's better than going to school in a different country, taking cool classes, and living in a different culture for four months and having the experience of a lifetime? If you can't go for a full semester, I encourage you to do a short-term program. Imagine lying on a beach in Barcelona, Spain one weekend and camping out in a tent at Oktoberfest in Germany a week later. This was my life for four months.
Here are a few reasons you should study abroad. First, an international experience looks great on a resume because it shows that you can place yourself outside your comfort zone and adjust. So many companies are international and communicate with other cultures. Second, it gives you a different perspective on the world and life. I know that I came back much more open-minded and curious about other cultures. You'll most likely also catch the travel bug. After returning home, all I wanted to do was travel and book trips. You also wind up much more mature and independent. You're constantly put in situations that you could never imagine, but you learn to cope and handle the situation accordingly. These experiences shape you and your life. And along the way, you meet people that will remain your friends long after the abroad experience ends. Go with your friends or without. I am willing to bet that you WILL have the time of your life. See the world!
