Janet Napolitano,Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security, issued this press statement about the December 25th attack onFlight 253:
"I am grateful to the passengers and crew aboard Northwest Flight 253 who reacted quickly and heroically to an incident that could have had tragic results. The important to budget travel is to prepare in front. When it happens to family trips, globetrotting, well-deserved vacations and/or going to see new spots we have never been before, the truth of expense and budgeting is always in the back of our thoughts. Planning and consuming our travel budget carefully is a consideration for most families. Curbing expending and charges, while still experiencing your vacation to its fullest, is the key to assured achievement and fiscal responsibility. Your pocketbook and family will thank you! The reasoning regarding protecting money while touring is simple: Even if your personal finances is extremely tight, you can still take a break and enjoy life! Simply put, life is just too short to never step out of the door or leaving the homestead! Also remembering that while traveling, whether on a price range or not, even the smallest of things can all add op to a huge vacation or travel costs!. The Department of Homeland Security immediately put additional screening measures into placefor all domestic and international flightsto ensure the continued safety of the traveling public. We are also working closely with federal, state and local law enforcement on additional security measures, as well as our international partners on enhanced security at airports and on flights.
The American people should continue their planned holiday travel and, as always, be observant and aware of their surroundings and report any suspicious behavior or activity to law enforcement officials.
Passengers flying from international locations to U.S. destinations may notice additional security measures in place. These measures are designed to be unpredictable, so passengers should not expect to see the same thing everywhere. Due to the busy holiday travel season, both domestic and international travelers should allot extra time for check-in."
