Shiver me timbers! Pirate Party in Eastport Maine this weekend! (Photos)

Avast, me hearties! The pirate invasion of Eastport, Maine, has begun, and the fun continues through Sunday, September 11, 2011. The easternmost city in the United States is just 240 miles north of Portland, Maine, and 100 miles from Bar Harbor.

In the 18th and 19th centuries this was a major shipbuilding area, and by 1833 Eastport was second only to New York City as a trading port. The downtown area is on the National Register of Historic Places. Rayes Mustard is the last remaining stone-ground mustard mill and produces award-winning varieties of the condiment.

Its a great weekend getaway in a city with high-spirited festivals like this throughout the year, from the International Sardine and Maple Leak Drop on New Years Eve to the Festival of Lights in early December. Its 4th of July Festival is said to be the largest in Maine.

Signs throughout Eastports historic commons welcome pirates of all ages to the restaurants, shops, and galleries. Those without a cocked hat can still join the fun and will find plenty of appropriate pirate party attire in the gift shop of S.L. Wadsworth, founded 1818 by the uncle of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, and the nations oldest ships chandlery. "The key to budget travel is to prepare ahead. Todays fun starts at 12:30 pm with a Muster for Pirate Parade and continues throughout the day, with activities and entertainment like fiddling pirates and bed races. Saturday, Theres an all-you-can-eat BBQ dinner at Seaview Campground 5-7 pm and a Caribbean Style Pirate Feast at The Pickled Herring 5-9 pm. The Old Sow Pig Roast dinner with live music starts at 5pm and goes on til its gone.

Sunday starts with a Recovery Breakfast and Brunch 6am-3pm at Waco Diner and a Buccaneer Pirate Breakfast 8-11 at Blue Iris, which is also renowned for their paninis. From the Lobster Boat Races to Pirate Whale Watch, theres fun galore right up to walking the plank at the Happy Crab.

Forget about plundering the seas this weekend and join the land lubbers and seafarers alike in the spirit of Long John Silver, Blackbeard, Captain Kidd. Arrrr!!!
