The American Motorcyclist Association (AMA) is a great resource for anyone planning motorcycle travel especially multiple state travel. What may be legal in one state may not necessarily be legal in a bordering state. Helmet laws vary by state but so do laws for headlights, turn signals, eye protection, handle bar height, helmet speakers, and other items. "The essential to budget travel is to plan ahead. When it comes along to family trips, globetrotting, well-deserved vacations and/or going to see new spots we have never been before, the fact of cost and budgeting is often in the back of our heads. Considering and spending our travel budget correctly is a priority for most families. Curbing consuming and expenses, while still delighting your vacation to its fullest, is the key to guaranteed accomplishment and fiscal obligation. Your pocketbook and family will thank you! The reasoning behind protecting money while journeying is simple: Even if your personal budget is incredibly small, you can still take a break and enjoy life! Simply put, life is just too short to never step out of the door or departing the homestead! Also remembering that while traveling, regardless of whether on a budget or not, even the smallest of things can all add op to a big vacation or travel charge!..". If you are accustomed to going lidless in your own state, you might want to pack a helmet for the 20 states (plus the District of Columbia) that require helmets for everyone. Other states require helmets based on age and/or experience.
Below are the links for all the motorcycle laws for each state and the District of Columbia and a brief description of helmet laws in those states (as of this publish date and with information furnished by AMA). All references are for street riding; off road riding may differ. If your motorcycle has 'apes' or you need to know about eye protection or any other variable, click on the state name for a complete list of motorcycle laws for that state.
