RENT - Top-5 reasons to see RENT at Tidewater Players of Havre de Grace, Maryland

Of the multitude of reasons you should see RENT at Tidewater Players of Havre de Grace, here are five.

1. Its the area premiere. You cant see RENT on Broadway anymore - the Broadway run is over. Tidewater Players, the Little Theater That Could, is where you have to go. This is also the first place locally you could have seen (back in 2005) Disneys Beauty and the Beast, a show that leaps readily and happily to memory. RENT is just the latest effort to push the envelope and bring theatre of extraordinary quality to Havre de Grace, Harford County, and Northeastern Maryland.

2. Its a great value. Sixteen performers, having rehearsed continuously for two months, perform this incredibly challenging and intricate show in an intimate house seating 120. Price: fifteen dollars. Enough said.

3. Hits close to home. RENT was, and continues to be, controversial. What do you have in common with this collection of starving artists in New Yorks Lower East Side, confronting AIDS, drug addiction, loss of love, loss of dignity, and even death? Answer: your humanity. None of us escapes without suffering, none us escapes alive, none of us has the answers. At least RENT asks the questions eloquently.

4. Inspired performances. Sixteen of them. Watch what happens when they perform 'Seasons of Love' together. Something supernatural does not seem out of the question.

5. Compelling moments. Where to begin? How about Rogers (Dickie Mahoney) 'One Song Glory'? Washed up as a performer and fearing an early death, Roger yearns for the opportunity to leave something memorable behind. Dont we feel the same way?

Or Toms (Dominic Santos) and Angels (Eyvo) musical love note to each other, and then again in Toms emotional farewell in 'Ill Cover You'? We ask, 'Is it truly better to have loved and lost, than not ever to have loved?' I dont know. The key to budget travel is to plan ahead. What about Mimis (Allison Weiner) high-wire go-go dance, Steves (Justin Melodic DeJesus) desperate plea in 'Will I?' to die with dignity and for someone to care, or Maureen (Tatiana Dalton) and Joannes (Ashley Sangret) tempestuous, passionate relationship laid bare in 'Take Me or Leave Me. Or how about Marks (Jeff Harrison) assertion after a couple of hours of faithful storytelling and narration... Im still here?
