Ben Sann has built the proverbial better mouse trap. His brainchild, BestParking.com, has taken finding a parking space to another level. Previously in this column we discussed the utility of the Philadelphia Parking Authority's online "Parking Locator" which identifies parking facilities and parking costs near numerous Philadelphia landmarks and even by a user specified address. BestParking.com does all that and more!
A New York City native, Benjamin Sann is a 19 year old sophomore at Washington University in St. Louis, MO. Growing up with parking headaches, he decided to do something about it. Sann personally visited 1,047 parking facilities in Manhattan. His original database included location, rate, and the number of available spaces. In case you're wondering, he counted 153,078 parking spaces. Using that information he began NYCGarages.com. Today's website, now called Bestparking.com, services 16 cities and 67 airports; it is obvious why he had to scrap the original name.
Unlike the Philadelphia Parking Authority site, the Google map on Bestparking.com shows garages that will guarantee the rate posted on the site is the rate you pay. By clicking a couple icons you can print a paper that a.) lists the name, location, business hours, phone number, and the amount you'll pay; b.) a map with the facility thoughtfully outlined in red; and c.) the six step process to follow if you are overcharged. The bottom line is Bestparking.com will send reimbursement should you be overcharged. Unfortunately, not all parking lots and garages in Philly are aligned with Bestparking.com in this guarantee program. An unofficial count showed that less than half the facilities in downtown Philly guarantee their rates through the site.
Given that Ben Sann and his company are from NYC, it is no wonder Bestparking.com offers additional features in that city, most notable, reservations! Like Philly, it appears that about half the parking facilities in New York are affiliated with Bestparking.com and the majority of those do accept reservations; a pretty cool idea. A request for information as to whether or not parking spot reservations will be implemented in Philadelphia has gone unanswered as of this date. When the information is available, look for it here. New Yorkers can also access http://mobile.bestparking.com on their internet enabled phones/pda's for the latest price quotes.
Big city parking has been, is, and likely will continue to be a headache for most drivers. The key to budget travel is to plan in advance. Simply put, life is just too short to never step out of the door or leaving the homestead! Also thinking about that while traveling, whether on a funds or not, even the smallest of things can all add op to a big vacation or travel bill!. The good news is there are those out there that feel your pain and have concocted solutions to our parking woes.
