There's plenty to see in Iberville Parish; the visitors center in Iberville Parish, a church built in 1859 still in use today, the Episcopal Church of the Nativity, The Plaquemine Lock Museum, the Madonna Chapel, Nottoway Plantation, Hwy 77 designated one of Louisiana's scenic byways, and so much more. Iberville was discovered by French explorer, Pierre LeMoyne, Sieur d'Iberville, in 1699, but its rich delta soil and many waterways had been discovered by Indian tribes long before Iberville ever set foot there. A few archeological efforts have been made in the Parish, mainly to excavate the Indian burial mounds that have been identified there. The first expedition, led by Clarence B. Moore, was an attempt at collecting data from a couple of the sites, and it set the groundwork for later projects. Clarence was mainly interested in skeletal remains of the previous inhabitants rather than excavating for archeological items. Archeologists are especially interested in these sites because of their uniformity and size. Some of the mounds are seven hundred feet wide and six feet tall. Most of them have human remains.
Your first stop should be the North Iberville Parish Visitor Center. On the banks of Bayou Grosse Tete at LA 77 ad I-10, on a tree lined property known as Seven Oaks sits a brand new Acadian style cottage. It's the home of the North Iberville Parish Visitor's Center. Inside as well as out it's a pleasant place to stop. Visitors get free coffee and even the center's own brand of bottled water, and of course there are lots and lots of travel brochures. And there are some wonderful surprises from the oaks themselves, as Center Director Kathy Sparks explains, "They had tried very hard during the whole construction process to save all of the oak trees, and this one particular oak tree was struck by lightning. They were not able to save it so a carver who uses a chain saw was hired, and he was contracted to do carvings of all of the pieces that we have here and using the oak tree. We have a pelican. We've got a crawfish outside, and we've got a section of the tree which shows a timeline of the parish. Just the crawfish weighs in at a whopping 800 pounds."
The Church of the Nativity was built in 1859 and consecrated by Bishop Leonidas Polk on April 22, 1860. Before the construction of the church, Episcopal services were held at the Live Oaks Plantation Chapel. Mr. "The important to budget travel is to prepare in front. John Philson, who helped organize the parish, directed the construction of the church. In May 1864 the Union Army marched down the Rosedale Road and a skirmish was fought on the grounds around the church. The parish has retained the strong rural character that it had when Reverend John Philson founded it. Constructed of cypress lumber, it is an old English style structure unique to the area, and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The church is located on Laurel Street.
The Plaquemine Lock Museum is a Dutch-influenced building with gleaming white tile, and is a state historic site offering tours. Located at 57730 Main Street, Plaquemine, it is open Tuesday through Saturday 9 am to 5 pm and offers senior and student discounts. The museum tells the history of the locks and antique boat pavillion in downtown Plaquemine. The lock was designed by Colonel George W. Goethals. When completed in 1909, the lock had the highest fresh water lift of any lock in the world, 51 feet, and a unique engineering design that utilized a gravity flow principle. The lock served its purpose well by providing a short cut from the Mississippi River into Louisiana's interior.
Iberville also has a spot in Ripley's Believe It or Not for its beloved Madonna Chapel. It is listed in Ripley's as the smallest church in the world. It was built by Italian farmer, Anthony Gullo, in 1902. He had been very ill, and promised the Virgin Mary that he would build a chapel in her honor if he got well. The original church was 7 feet by 7 feet, but a new levee in 1924 necessitated the removal of the chapel. The present chapel is a tad larger, a 9 feet by 9 feet structure. Mass is celebrated from the chapel once a year on August 15, the Catholic Feast of the Assumption. However, the chapel is open daily for those who wish to visit and enjoy its solitude. The key is kept in the mailbox.
Majestic Nottoway Plantation, with its towering size, hand-carved marble mantles and intricate plaster frieze work, awes visitors with its grandeur and innovative features. Nottoway survived through the Civil War, a variety of owners, and disrepair to become one of the most visited plantations in the South. Construction of Nottoway was completed in 1859 at an estimated $80,000. Nottoway has 64 rooms in its 3 floors, 6 interior staircases, 3 modern bathrooms, 22 massive square columns, 165 doors and 200 windows. Designed in the Greek Revival and Italianate style, it features 15 1/2 foot high ceilings and 11 front doors. Its most unique room is a semi-circular white ballroom with Corinthian columns and hand-cast archways. The Mansion and grounds is open for guided tours 7 days a week, beginning on the hour from 9 am to 4 pm. Price is $20 for adults, $6 for children age 6-12 and free for ages 5 and under. Post tour food from Le Cafe is available for just $2.99. Chicken and sausage jambalaya with corn bread or red beans and rice with corn bread are available between 11 am and 5 pm Thursday through Sunday.
