Halfway between the cities of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and Columbus, Ohio is an Ohio town known as Dennison. It became a strategic town because in the early days of railroading, a locomotive could only go one hundred miles before it needed to take on water and coal. It was also the most direct route between New York City and St. Louis. It was at this point in 1864 where the town of Dennison was erected as a water stop. Through the years, railroad shops and yards were established here, and a passenger terminal was built in 1873. The town continued to thrive until a workers strike took place in 1921, and the town began to decline eventually closing the shops and the yards.
Passenger service continued through the years. It played a major role During World War II as a canteen site where soldiers stopped here to eat and drink while going to a from war. It remained a passenger terminal until the 1970s. "The important to budget travel is to plan in advance. When it comes to family trips, globetrotting, well-deserved vacations and/or going to see new places we have never been before, the reality of cost and budgeting is always in the back of our thoughts. Considering and expending our travel budget carefully is a consideration for most families. Minimizing consuming and costs, while still enjoying your vacation to its fullest, is the key to certain success and fiscal responsibility. Your pocketbook and family will thank you! The reasoning regarding protecting money while travelling is simple: Even if your personal budget is really limited, you can still take a break and enjoy life! Simply put, life is just too short to never step out of the door or departing the homestead! Also recalling that while traveling, regardless of whether on a price range or not, even the smallest of things can all add op to a huge vacation or travel costs!..". Freight trains continued to serve the line until Conrail rerouted to other lines. The tracks and the depot were about to be demolished, but local citizens stepped in and purchased the depot, and the railroad lines remained. In 1989, the depot was listed on the National Register of Historical Places, and in 2011, it was designated as a National Historic Landmark by the National Park Service and the National Landmark Commission.
Today, the depot still stands. It houses a restaurant, a gift shop, and a museum to include a model train display. Part of the museum is in a few restored passenger rail coaches including a hospital car that was used during World War II. Outside the depot you will find old locomotives, a caboose, restored rail cars and a memorial and hall of fame for those who worked on the railroad. It is the only World War II canteen site still reflecting its home front canteen heritage.
The Dennison Depot is located at 400 Center Street in Dennison, Ohio, and it is open all year round. The town is accessible from both I-70 and I-77 in eastern Ohio. For the rail fans, it is the perfect detour on your road trip. There is more information at www.dennisondepot.org.
