If you havent purchased your holiday airfare this year, then the time is NOW. Prices will only increase as the temperature and days to Thanksgiving and Christmas decrease. In fact, it is said that for every day you wait to buy your tickets, you should plan an extra $5 added to your ticket. As crazy as that sounds, its pretty much spot on. The airlines know that those of you who will be visiting family will do it regardless of cost, so the higher the fares, the more money they make. How can you avoid spending an arm and a leg on airfare?
Fly on a Tuesday, Wednesday or Saturday. These are the slowest days to fly during the week. Wednesday is the least busy, so shoot for one of those, EXCEPT for the Wednesday before Thanksgiving, because that is when everyone will be flying.
Fly on the holiday. If you celebrate Thanksgiving and Christmas, you know that everyone wants to be at their destination by the time the holiday rolls around. You can save quite a few bucks, and maybe sacrifice some time with your family, by flying on Thanksgiving or Christmas Day.
Ship gifts ahead. You can also buy once you get there or give gift cards/money. Unless you have very small gifts that can fit in your carry-on, you could pay up to $250 each way to check a bag. Its true! If you have a large oversized bag that is also weighted down with gifts, you will be charged the baggage fee, the oversized bag fee and also the overweight bag fee. Shipping gifts ahead allows you to travel lighter and save, potentially, hundreds of dollars in the process.
Fly carry-on only. It can be hard to size down packing for cold weather. Look for lightweight clothing that is also warm and can be layered. Many fleece tops are stylish and also super warm. Cardigans also pair well with t-shirts and other long-sleeved tops. Make sure all your items match. When all your tops match all your bottoms, you can take much less and still make multiple outfits. Plus, you can always do laundry at whoevers house youll be at. A regular checked bag can cost as much as $35 each way. By flying with just a carry-on, you can save that money for gifts or after holiday sales!
Check the airfare sales every Tuesday. With the amount of sales happening now, it would be hard to not find one to match your needs before November gets here. Sign up for emails and/or scour the booking and airline sites each day for the new sale. You never know what you might find. Use Yapta to search for price drops, too.
