Many frequent travelers and winter vacation shoppers are wondering what the Southwest/Air Tran merger will mean for upcoming travel plans. Not to worry. If anything, initially at least, themerger spells deals and packages galore for loyal Southwest customers.
As of October 1st, theSouthwest website's announced vacation packages include skiing in Colorado and sunning in San Diego (must be booked by Oct. 14), and even cruise specials on the world's largest ship, the Allure of the Seas (Southwest offers packages including airfare to and from departure ports).
Also on sale this week are Houston to Denverflights for$69 each way. (Purchase by November 24, 2010 for travel through March 11, 2011.)
Many things will remain the same after the merger. Chicago Midway will still be the airline's hub, and we Albuquerque, Phoenix and Houston customers will continue to enjoy the low-cost, high-caring service to which we've become accustomed--including free checked bags.
But, the merger also adds a few bonuses. Flights to Atlanta and other major hubs will be added, eliminating the need for connecting flights and saving us even more time and money. Especially exciting for some are planned flights to Newark, NJ. This itinerary is contingent upon finalizing the Continental/United merger by November 30, when Southwest stands to inherit Continental's former spots at Newark Airport (EWR).
The new east coast stops open many new doors for overseas travelers whose cruises and flights to Europe and Africa often leave from Newark, New York and Atlanta.
Although other recent airline mergers have shaken up the industry, that should not be the case here. Southwest gets that most of us who travel for a living, or even just occasionally for leisure, simply want to be treated like human beings rather than cattle. We like not paying $5 for a couple of peanuts. We appreciate a good laugh when our flight attendants infuse their safety instructions with humor. And most of all, we want to keep our low fares and free checked bags.
Based on Southwest's track record, one has to believe the loyal following they've worked so hard to develop over the years willremain their top priority. This traveler has no doubt they'll find a way to make this new, giant airline work for us, not against us.
