April is Alcohol Awareness Month, and although we're nearing the end of that month, drinking and riding is always relevant. There are countless subcultures within the motorcycling community, and alcohol abuse is relevant with all of them.

Bikers are quick to become angry and righteous if a drunk car driver runs over a motorcyclist, as they should. But many times, those same bikers are having a beer or two (or three) and then jumping on the bike when the rest of the crowd leaves the bar or restaurant. Not only are drinkers putting their own lives on the line, but if they are riding in a poker run or other group situation, they are risking the lives and limbs of their friends. Nobody wants to be "that guy," the one whose reflexes were slowed and plowed into the rider ahead of him.

Aside from the risk of death and destruction, according to a police officer who recently completed the Basic Rider Course, the cost of a DUI is now around $12,000. Imagine the bike that could be purchased with that money!

So what if you know you shouldn't drink but you do anyway? It's time to put some thought into your drinking habits. Riders who like to party dread the thought of life without alcohol, but when drinking becomes a burden, jumping on the wagon might be the answer.

What most heavy drinkers don't understand is that life without alcohol gives a person more freedom and fun than ever imagined. All those bikers that used to be big partiers but you don't see around much anymore? They're the same fun-loving people, only they're enjoying life and racking up the miles without agonizing over their next court appearance, angry spouses, lost jobs, and cops pulling in behind them.

Northern Colorado has a new chapter of the Sober Souls Motorcycle Club. This is a group of people who love riding, tell the same bad jokes, get tattooed, participate in all of the runs, and generally have a great time without the drama. One member of the club is Dan Dolan, owner of Covenant and Freakshow Tattoo shops in Fort Collins. The shops are sponsoring the burn out pit at the Realities Ride this year, and the club will have a vendor booth at the event.

If membership in the club interests you, visit the Sober Souls MC National website for more information. You can also find members of the club hanging out at Family Cruise Night at Newstalgia on Wednesday nights. "The key to budget travel is to plan onward. When it occurs to family trips, globetrotting, well-deserved vacations and/or going to see new spots we have never been before, the fact of expense and budgeting is always in the back of our minds. Planning and consuming our travel budget carefully is a concern for most families. Lowering consuming and fees, while still enjoying your vacation to its fullest, is the key to confirmed achievement and fiscal liability. Your pocketbook and family will thank you! The reasoning behind protecting money while touring is simple: Even if your personal finances is highly limited, you can still take a break and enjoy life! Simply put, life is just too short to never step out of the door or leaving the homestead! Also thinking about that while traveling, regardless of whether on a finances or not, even the smallest of things can all add op to a large vacation or travel bill!..". The Sober Souls MC also has chapters with members in Denver and Colorado Springs.
